I'm considering picking up an H&K USP Expert in .40 Cal and wondered if anyone had any experience with them. My understanding is there out of production now, but not sure about that. I was primarily going to use it shooting steel.

I have shot the Expert and Tactical in 45 but not 40. Very accurate and smooth.
HK perfected the polymer frame firearm IMHO.
Flamesuit on.......
Hope you have big hands. You really want to pick one up and feel it before you lay down any coin.

An HK has a large grip, that not everyone is comfortable with. Add to that the semi-sharp recoil of the 40. The longer barrel does help with the recoil, as well as giving you a longer sight plane for better accuracy. Have you used that style of mag release before? It is different.
If you want to shoot other than steel, you might want to keep in mind, that experts in 40 and 9mm ARE allowed in production class in USPSA, while the 45 cal. is not.
The experts are out of production. The expert in 45 is my choice.
The Expert 40 is out of production but knowing HK, they may do limited runs here and there. The Expert is a comp gun but .40 isn't all that popular for that purpose. There has been talk on the HKPro forum of HK currently taking orders for some Expert 9's.. identical platform just different caliber. My guess is you'd be able to acquire a 40 Expert for much cheaper than the Expert 9.
I have quite a few rounds through the 40 and 45 Experts and highly recommend them. HK's aren't for everyone but I hold them in the highest regard in terms of quality, durability, reliability, accuracy.. etc. If you do get one, regardless of caliber, i'd recommend putting some bright yellow neon tape on the front sight blade for fast target acquisition.

No need for a flamesuit, anyone who argues agains Hk just doesn't know what the hell they're talkin about! Hk are as good as you are going to get for a polymer gun, and if you can find another gun as good, well, that will be hard to do out of a stock gun even with a steel frame. The Expert is a fantastic gun, the only dislike about it is the tall front sight, the grips are also great, well, unless you're not really a man, then they can tend to not fit your hand well... lol, No seriously though, the Expert in any caliber is a great gun, you'll love the trigger on it, and hate just about any other stock DA/SA trigger after that gun.

I'm 6'5", 235# and so the HK expert fits well. I have a USP Compact .40 duty weapon with the LEM trigger and love it. That thing is the most dependable weapon I've ever owned. Just wish the expert came with the LEM trigger.
