seriously... what can we do about keeping shooting sites clean.

we already are outspoken about it.

we leave places better than we found 'em

we don't let others get away with leaving their crap or shooting things that shouldn't be shot.

most of the really bad cr@p happens at places we don't frequent and I know it's not anyone we know (better not be) [poke]

what can we do to bring a stop to these jackasses who leave a mess?

pointing fingers doesn't do a damn thing except make us look like lieberals.

i don't think there is anything we can do other than try to make as positive of example as we can. it only takes one bad apple to ruin the bunch. there is no way to police a public range 24 hours a day 7 days a week. the people making the mess don't really care about the range anyway. they are breaking the rules already. i don't think they would care if the range closes or not. this is one of the reasons i do 99.9% of my shooting at my own home and not at a range. other than you never know when the yahoo shooting next to you might be a moron

Regular cleanup days coordinated with the USFS. It seems to make them happy at Pawnee...

Well, we could posts signs at any place we go to, would cost us, but maybe USFS/NP would help defray the costs if we commit to helping clean up a few times a year?

Big Brother security cameras EVERYWHERE!

[poke]

...seriously, I think so far BadShot's suggestion might be a good idea. Just some simple messages might help remind people that they can't take the land for granted. But why would it cost us, why wouldn't the USFS pay for the signs? It seems like something they would want more of.

At any rate, I'm up for helping out with the clean ups.

Oh, I might add that if design work needed to be done for any signs (if you were to go that route) then I would be happy to donate my time to help with that, as graphic design is what I do for a living.

signs saying there is a clean up x number of times / year wont do anything but say "hey, go ahead and leave a mess, someone cleans it up x times / year"

My goal is that EVERYONE cleans up after themselves, not that the place gets cleaned up. If everyone did what they're supposed to, a cleanup day wouldn't be needed.

Well I agree signs with that kind of message wouldn't affect squat, no doubt. But what if they said something like, "Shooters: Make sure to clean up everything that you brought in! The USFS requires that these lands stay clean blah, blah, blah...". Something like that, I dunno. Would that make any difference :?:

[postal] Perhaps the signs should say this area is maintained by gun owners -- and you should think twice about pissing off anybody with guns.

how about:

CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELVES
OR YOU WILL BE SHOT
NO EXCUSES

Well, we could posts signs at any place we go to......and they will become yet another target for the fools that are causing the problems.

PLEASE RUN FAST, WE NEED MORE PRACTICE ON MOVING TARGETS.

Let me know when to show up and I'll bring my truck and some beer.[beer]

I thought about the possibility of "adopting a shooting area" or two

Kind of like they do with sections of highway

If groups COMMITED to regular clean up it might take a little of the heat off

I would like to see the Forrest Service issue tickets for people dumping illeagaly. If they hand out enough tickets word will get around to pick up, or be fined. Revenue from those could be used to pay for clean up costs. Volunteering for cleanups is only part, the roll away dumpsters and forrest service vehicles cost money that they would rather not appropriate.

Please keep us posted on clean ups. I always volunteer my time for the Rampart range clean ups.

I hope none of you take this wrong but here is an idea. To start I don't want the Gov. taking my picture anymore than any of you guys do. It would be a temporary deal with the USFS or even the Sheriffs Dept. They could set up a camera and catch some of these dirt bags. Or even someone from the club could set up something and turn it in.

We had some problems up here with poachers and such and thats how they were caught.

It may take something drastic like this to put some of these slobs out of business.

Either that or lose more places to shoot. We've lost several places to shoot up here because of the slobs.

I nominate 7idl to do recon at our shoot locations using a ghillie suit and long range video camera and then busting the perps in the style of the show "Cheaters"

...didn't that dude get stabbed in one episode?

7idl

I deflect my nomination to Karl, who's more into bustin' perps than I am. [pirate]

Karl already has a Gillie suit anyway.

I'll second it.

How about a sign that we put up after one of the club shoots that says something like

"We were here and cleaned up when we left. No thanks are required - we like to do our part to keep the site clean. (our logo)"

The idea is we're advertising that we did our part and subtly giving the hint to have whoever benefits from the clean site to do the same.

only problem with that is that someone can take that sign and do some harm... nice Idea though.

what we do as 4 wheelers is work out an agreement with the USFS or BLM to do routine cleanups on trails and therefore dumpsites and normally part of that agreement is signage stating that we participate in the cleanup of the site as well as wheel there and please do your part to keep our Trails open sort of thing. I suppose that a similar deal can be worked out for our shoot sites too. But I can tell you that jerks will still be jerks and not cleanup after themselves no matter what you do so for me its just better to assume the inevitable that two weeks after we do a cleanup trash will show up again, and no matter what you put up signage trail closed rails or what ever. they will use it as an obstacle to wheel on or shoot it. The only thing we have on them is our physical ability to keep coming back and cleanup. Personally I think that after we have a club shoot we can cleanup. If we dedicate a weekend just to cleanup and play a bit after that, I think a couple hours once a month should be more then enough to keep the place clean.what do you guys think?

btw, spring pawnee cleanup

Hello,

This is Sarah Proctor from the Pawnee National Grassland. I know a lot of you have either helped out with past target shooting clean ups or you have been interested in doing some clean up out on the Pawnee. I just wanted to inform you and kind of give you a heads up in advance that we are planning to do a clean up in May this year, most likely on May 12, and have May 19th as a back up in case weather is bad on the 12. Right now we are planning on working from 9am to about 3pm (and if you need to leave earlier that is fine too.)

So right now I am just trying to get the word out and hopefully people will mark their calendars and tell anyone else they know who might be interested. We are doing this in conjunction with the Denver Audubon society so they will have some volunteers and I am hoping to get some
volunteers to help as well. The area we are planning to clean up is a big
area so all the help we can get would be great! It is an area that is popular for target shooting, and just this year we have closed our Forest Service road ( FS road 41) in this area to help restore and clean up the destruction and trash that has damaged this area. If you are familiar with this area ...it is near County road 102 and road 41. And depending on how much help we get there is about 1-4 sections we would like to clean up.

I'd kind of like to get some feed back from you all, if you think you might be able to help us out in May or not. Also we are kind of searching around to see if anyone has access to dump trucks. We had one last year but I don't know for sure if we can use it again this year. So I am just trying to see if maybe someone knows someone who has access to one, and they wouldn't mind if we use it on May 12.

There is no rush to get back to me, I am just doing some early planning and get a feel for how much help we may be able to get. But please do let me know, and spread the word as much as you can! By the end of the month I should have a little flyer made up to distribute.

Thank you again for all the work you have done for us, and I hope to see you out there again this year!
Sarah Proctor
