There used to be a thread that had good recommendations of where to get a tat in the Denver area. I dont even mind driving a little bit for a GOOD artist.
Gotta be good and gotta be a great artist.

I used to play hockey with the owner of Tribal Rites. At the Westminster location there's an artist that was on Miami Ink. I think, anyway. He was on a tattoo show anyway. Dude has talent.
WWW.TribalRites.com. Mike Schuger is the owner.

Phantom 8, Englewood
Landmark, Denver. My bad thought Nik changed it to legend
Your best bet is to web surf for studios in the area. Then check out their web site to see if a specific artist work looks acceptable to you.
THEN stop by the shops and talk to them. look at their portfolio check out the work stations and bathrooms. Is their autoclave spore tested and how often, can they produce autoclave logs? Most shops are single USE which means needle & tube is disposed of (correctly) Single use is different than new needle. USE is one time then tossed, new needle means they should still be autoclaving their tubes. Do they have current certification regarding blood borne pathogen training, when was the last time they attended a refresher course? How long have they been tattooing? The industry standard is 3-5 years for an apprenticeship. IF they are 3 years or less you should not be paying full boat for work MOST (key word) most shops have their apprentices charge 50-75% of retail.
Of course there are some very talented young guns out there who do dynamic work. Their most impressive work may not be the genre of work you want so again check them out.
Just because one can do excellent portraits does not mean then can produce full color pieces and vice-versa.
Remember you get what you pay for.

Nik Pew at Landmark tattoo. He's done 90% of my work, my wife's, my dad, my sister, my mom, and tons of friends.
He work at phantom8 for like 15 years then last year or so opened up a shop with a couple other guys.
His schedule is usually booked a month or 2 out, but that's a good thing, you always gotta wonder about the guy that can get you right in, there's a reason for that.

My next ink will probably be done somewhere in Honolulu. I need to start checking into that. Thanks for the reminder.

Big Mike at White Lotus. He is around a 4 to 6 month wait but there is a reason for it, he's one of the best. He doesn't stencil your tattoo on he free hands everything.

Bump this thread. I have gotten all of my ink done by the same artist at To The Grave in the Springs but now that I live up here I'm thinking of trying one of the local shops here. I have looked into Tribal Rites in Westy and might give them a shot today.

How come? Just out of curiosity?
good timing... I have a 1/2 sleeve that's almost 30 years old (Thinking about it, I think it's like 27 years ago) and is looking a little "tired"...I'm thinking it may be time to throw some new color into it

Brian Thurlow at Th'ink Tank on broadway. Amazing work.
I also have looked into 5280 Ink on Federal and may go over there this afternoon.
Lots of good suggestions here already...
If you're looking to northern Co, there are some good places in Ft. Collins
Millenium, Skibo's, and Tribal Rites all come to mind.
Got my first at Skibo's and love it. There's a sign in the doorway that says, "Welcome to your newest addiction."
Another vote for Th'ink Tank Tattoo, multiple artist all top notch and you can find someone that is your style. Nik Pew is another excellent choice.

I'm sure he's good i just have issues with working out of the house inkers. UNLESS they have a specific room set aside for tattooing, with washable surfaces, seperate hand washing station, etc. The cross contamination risk is too high, for both clients AND people who live there.

I hear ya, and I wouldn't go to him if he wasn't clean. Honestly, I won't even go to a shop anymore, unless it's a pretty special artist. Don't like the attitude in most shops, but there are a few exceptions.
Well I ended up at Pleasure and Pain Tattoo tonight, they are located down off of Alameda close to I-25. I went per a recommendation of a member here. I was highly impressed and will be returning there for my next piece and future pieces. I have some cards if you'd like more info. The shop number is 720-621-3234. Ask for Freez. He usually needs a few days to fit in appointments but does great work. Freez has handled work for Broncos players and Nuggies players. A big +1 from me!

If you can walk in..... walk out. Guys with skill schedule well into the future. Don't be cheap, good tattoo monkeys are as expensive as good grease monkeys.

Usually an appointment cancels OR like me you leave X amount of time open for walk ins. I always left 50% of my day open, i could put out walk in designs or off the wall flash at a good pace. There is more money in the walk in trade than custom work, in the right area.
Appointments bring you a set amount of cash flow per hour, day week.
With walks in's you can do a basic name ,up to the start of a clients back, calf or sleeve. To question why an artist is not booked or busy when you walk in the door, shows you have no concept how the tattoo industry works. Or you have been watching too many reality shows.

I agree. Dumb TV shows like Miami Ink and such have made people think that if you aren't a few weeks out on your appointments then you aren't doing good work. Most legit artists plan to leave time open for walk-ins for easier pieces just like you said. To judge an artist based on the fact that you can walk in and just start planning out a piece is not right.

True enough. I can't even get in to see my favourite artist. He's booked out two years, and isn't accepting any new clients...
