Man shot after dropping gun while mowing

Posted: 05/21/2012 05:49:39 AM MDT

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A Colorado Springs man is recovering after he dropped his gun and it went off while he was mowing his lawn. Police say the man had a loaded handgun in his pocket on Sunday when it fell out, struck the sidewalk and discharged. The bullet hit the victim's lower leg. The man, who was not identified, was treated and released from a hospital.

I'm sorry, I just don't buy these "dropped gun and it went off" stories (unless there are a LOT of people packing Nambu Type 94s).

Modern guns just do not discharge when dropped. They don't discharge unless you're futzing around with it and you pull the trigger.

wow... again, I'm befuddled... I don't buy the drop it and kaboom stuff either. I've purposely tried doing that a few times in my younger stupid days, never had an AD.

Guns don't shoot people; sidewalks shoot people.

Who said it was a modern gun?

A better holster might be the answer.
I bet he is just getting out of lawn detail with the wife!

Doesn't everyone mow w/ their gun? I know I do. :D

Seriously, I have. Not so much intentionally. I just carry pretty much all the time and it's there when I go to mow.

Yep, that's how I rusted my gun.

Same here, the only two places you'll find me unarmed are in the shower or in bed (and even then, in both places it's in my pants on the floor just a few feet from me).

Its not a matter of paranoia or any silly BS the antis come up with, its just easier.

I carry 24/7/365 because I can't predict WHEN I might need my gun ... if I could do that I wouldn't ever need one.

wow, the killer concrete strikes again.

now what if it was a revolver or a 1911, he drops it on the hammer hard enough to pull the hammer back and strike the primer with enough force to discharge the weapon.

When will we have better sidewalk regulation? Who will think of the childrens?!?

Seriously though, mowing your yard is dangerous. If you live in the Fort Collins/Loveland area I do mowing, trimming & aerations so let me do the dangerous work for you. It will seem like a bargain when your neighbor shoots his dick off trying to mow and save a few bucks.

Here's a concept...IWB holster maybe? I never understood carrying a gun in your pocket. I too don't buy the whole "dropped it and it went off" statement. Unless it was a High Point...LMAO. I wouldn't try to kill myself with one of those POS guns for fear it would malfunction.

IWB aren't always practical. When I mow my own yard or go to the gym I carry a small LCP in a pocket holster in the pocket of my gym shorts. I haven't ever dropped a gun out of my pocket and if I did I seriously doubt it would fire. I've been doing this for many years now and never felt that it wasn't secure. I don't know the full details of the story but there appears to be large pieces missing that fully explain what happened.

Why was the guy mowing the sidewalk? At least at my place I mow the yard. [Flower]

I bet your sidewalk is unruly and an eye-sore for all your neighbors.

I know the nurse that took care of this guy.

Seems as though he has a thing against rattlesnakes and has run into them in his yard before.

Beyond that, no details.
