When I'm asked, what did you get for Christmas? When I proudly say a new AR-15, they give me a blank look and reply- "What do you want one of those things for?" The first time I was blown away because my first thought was, "What do you mean what do I want it for, don't you want one too?
Then I considered other responses,
1. Because with our new Governor Ritter and the rest of the knuckle-heads the people so wisely elected, the chances of getting one in the future are getting smaller and smaller. The liberal response to this is: "If there were no guns, then nobody would get shot, and wouldn't be a good thing?" Reasoning with people like that a waste of time and causes brain damage.
2. When tell them that the Alla Zombies are going to bring their act over here and I would like to be prepared, they ask me "Do you prefer Reynolds Wrap or generic foil to make your hats?"
3. Maybe I should just tell them I enjoy shooting it.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Because I can.

People that usually make those remarks are too stupid to understand the difference between a "semi-automatic" and a "machine gun".

If we didn't have cars we wouldn't lose 26K people every year to automobile accidents. If we didn't have knives, people wouldn't get stabbed. If we didn't have firearms, we probably wouldn't be a free people and the USA probably wouldn't exist. Wishing firearms never existed is a pipe dream. Those same people probably think the UN is effective.

Katrina was an excellent demonstration of what happens when government breaks down.

Many of the technological and medical advances those same people take for granted today were a direct result of warfare--necessity is the mother of invention. Later, I've got to go microwave some breakfast.

I think one of the problems when discussing the subject are the "rules of engagement." If the beginning assumption is: why I should justify having it as opposed to how you can justify my not having it, puts me on the defensive and I am starting the discussion from behind.

Interesting word- edumacate
what does it mean and what are the proper procedures?

Is their main objection with your owning guns at all, or with your new "evil looking black rifle"? IMO, either way I would tell them that as humans we have a God-given right to self-defense. Then ask them what they would do in a self-defense scenario, say, if a criminal were to break into their home? Would they feel confident that dialing 911 were to keep the bad guy at bay with a prompt police response?

As you said, arguing with people like that can more often than not be a waste of time. But not always. Many people just blindly believe the anti-gun rantings merely on an emotional level with not having even thought about this issue. Hard to believe, I know.

The Police can only clean up the mess, if you want to feel safe, hang out at a donut shop.-- Just kidding I respect the police it's just their job reactive and they can not possibly provide everybody security.

I don't argue with somebody that makes a stupid statement like that. You can't reason with stupidity. Let's face it when they say that exactly what are they implying? I think we all know the answer so I give them the answer they want.

I tell them so when Christmas comes this year and the mall is packed I can kill as many people as possible in the shortest period of time. I then walk away.

They are obviously shocked and have no idea what to say next. They know I am just being a smart a$$. This makes them think and usually they will approach me again in a more intelligent manner. At that point they are actually thinking and you have a chance of an intelligent discussion.

You think it's bad when you own an AR try owning an M16 (or any MG for that matter) and it's ten times worse.

Amen!

There are many places that you can not even own any weapons.

I asked my African friend...

"Can you have guns in your country?"

He said "Only the bad guys!"

I have wepons ... because I can!

To this day..............

Just say not only are they fun to shoot but, the AR-15 is a great weapon for many reasons. Dependability and accuracy to name a couple. Tell them you wanted to be able to drag your gun through a mud puddle and still be able to rely on it when needed. Here's a video that show how tough and durable the AR-15 really is. http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=4715584613657367622&sourceid=zeitgeist
