Okay, I'm about to ante up for my first Battle Rifle and am in a quandry. I really like the JLD PTR-91 in 7.62, but I've also been reading about the XCR with it's ability to rapidly switch caliber from 5.56 to 6.8 or one of the other new compromise calibers. The PTR-91 could double as a big game rifle but the XCR could be shot a lot more for the same money.
So what are the pros and cons. BTW, I was deliberately choosing not to consider a gas operated AR clone.
I think that all said and told, if you're willing to wait on some of the conversion kits and accept that you won't be getting .308 out of the XCR that if I had the money, it would be something I'd consider. Put better sights on it that the YMH stuff offered and you'll have a nice set of options.
I own a PTR91 and love it to deal, pros are.. plenty of parts available.. WAY cheap mags and reasonable options for stocks etc (MagPul is even releasing a PTR PRS Stock soon!!) Cons.. some parts can be a bit pricey and uh.. hmmm.. uh... hmmm not as modular as the AR series? I'm coming up short here.
Nuthin wrong with a piston upper for the AR platform, several options out there and to me, it looked like the switch kits from XCR would run you about what a decent upper would on a gas blow back AR. But being that you said that you're not considering that system, you just need to decide if multi-caliber capability is what you are really going after. It looked like the longest barrel they were going to have available was 18.4" wonder why?

Update on the final decision. I bought the XCR and am having a blast (pun intended) with it. But I also ordered a DSA FAL which I'm still waiting for.
SigsRule, I know this is an old thread, but if you are still around what do you think of the XCR and the DSA FAL? Any regrets getting the FAL over the PTR91?
