Doing a little upgrading with some parts I had gotten in a trade, I have to call BS on the "just like building an AR".

To avoid a problem, I thought I'd just keep my old harddrive with all my programs and files and install a new "fresh" hard drive when I went from Win 7 32b to 7 64b...

Yep, that hasn't worked out so well, so if anyone can give me a hand getting all my stuff on the old harddrive either accessible or transferred, I'll buy ya a cold beer...

Just like building an AR, my ASS

you just have to plug it in to the accessibility port. then it should be accessible.

You left out the part about it being just like building an AR if... IF an AR was built and assembled in Taiwan by small Asian females with tiny fingers : )

Who is taking up the IT support mantle now that Byte has moved to the Peach State?

I see your problem. It looks like the doodad that goes from the thingamajig and connects to the whatchmacallit is on backwards. Hope that helps...

When I did my build I installed the new OS on a fresh HDD and then just plugged the old HDD in as an extra. I could immediately access the old HDD as a separate folder from "my computer"

I love your cardboard case! It will win the "Tree hugger" seal of approval.

Do you just need the data off your old hard drive? If so then plug in into an external hard drive case and plug it in once you get the new OS running. You should be able to see and copy everything where you need to then.

-- that's what I did. I had thought I could run the programs on the old one, but it doesn't like me. I can open and look at everything, just can't launch it (Quicken, Steam, Word, etc).

I must have left the extractor spring out. Now that I think about it, there are a lot of leftover parts...

My son's overseas as a contractor right now (you'd think he'd have gotten enough after 3 tours of Iraq), or I'd ask him.

As he says, "it's all about good cable management". ...ya? Then why do they have so many friggin cables?

If its installed as the second drive you should be able to run the programs on it. However if you went from Win 32 to Win 64 you it might not let you. Not sure but Google is your friend in this instance.

You will have to re-install the programs you want to use as just copying them from one drive to the next does not work like it did in DOS many years ago. Since you also went to 64-bit Windows some of your old programs may be incompatible.

Sorry to break the news to ya but that's how it works. Unless you want to hear about the Windows registry, DLL's and more techy stuff that is the situation.

Can I keep both op systems and boot to D: (old) to do my day-to-day stuff in 32b --with new Bios, and boot to C: (new), to get my butt kicked by 12 year olds with heavy weapons and potty mouths in 64b?

Yeah you could. I would recommend one of these to do that:
http://www.cru-dataport.com/products/DataPort.php

Just buy one install kit that comes with one drive carrier and a secondary drive carrier. Then put whatever one you want in before you power it up and away you go.

A lot cleaner than doing a dual-boot setup and less hassle to setup if you want to get up and going sooner than later.

Because programs are accessed via the computer's registry. It all exists on your old hard drive, but Windows is running off the registry on the new hard drive. You will need to reinstall your programs. But you can copy your configs and whatever other documents over from the old one to use after you've installed the apps.

Sorry. It was supposed to be a secret ; )

Send him a PM. He is still on the board. I'm pretty sure he mentioned it in the thread about his Dad's funeral.
