HELMETS.
I don't really want to get in to a YOU Should wear a helmet.
I want to discuss the IDIOTS wearing a $400+ Carbon Fiber helmet or other style of protective head gear on a motorcycle or the bicycle helmet, because it helps in an accident.
I want to know how the F$%^&*k you willingly put something on your head "just in case" THEN wear flip flops, shorts and tank top on your motorcycle
OR bicycle helmets for the whole family and pedal around in bare feet and no shirt (males) or very skimpy shorts and halter top (women) YET justify wearing a helmet to "protect your head"
Most if not all these folks have never taken a spill.
Where do you go to find skimpy shorts and halter tops?

I prefer leather over synthetic any day. It will last much farther on pavement at 60+mph.

"very skimpy shorts and halter top (women)" being a man, if I can't wear this, ill have to wear my leopard skin thong. But I'm petite (6'5" 400lbs) for a samoan.

I always thought that was the average size for Tongans. I must be mistaken.

You've got to know that some bureaucrat will see those and think they need to mandate the use of those (particularly on Federal installations).

I think his point was that some folks will spend a ton of $$ for some of the top-of-the-line gear and then spoil the effort by wearing something totally inappropriate on the bike.
I spent $365 for my Shoei helmet about 12 years ago and winced at the cost (my previous helmet had only cost about $70) but when I had my motorcycle wreck I swore that if I ever rode again I'd spend $1k for a helmet if it could provide even a touch more protection.

After I wrecked my Vespa, I found that skinny jeans do nothing to help from road rash. Some riding pants would have been better. Thanks god I had my orange vest on.

Finish the rest of my post then edit like the media.
I have a CF helmet and a few others. ANYTIME i ride (rode) since the fukd up knee, i always wore gear of some sort. It's the helmet without anything else that's the stumper, something you obviously do not lean towards, based on your reply.

It's been talked about. remember orange vest and mandatory helmets on base, no matter what the state law is.

That's now on and off base. Plus gloves, ankle high boots, pants, sleeves, party hat, CFLCC card, etc.....

GO TO BED. You have a big day of moving a heavy object by your lonesome.
Does road rash kill you like slamming your head into a curb will? That's why they do that.

When I was at Camp Pendleton they told us we had to wear a vest and helmet off base too. The were saying our family would not get our SGLI if we died not wearing one. I don‘t know if it was BS or not. Every one wore a helmet (state law) but a lot of Marines would take off the vest when they were of base. It was best to just wear it. Around town you could tell who was Marine, and god forbid you run into a gung ho NCO that got picked on in high school see‘s you do something wrong. One way or another he’ll find out what unit your in, and go running like a little b!#ch to your Co 1stSgt. What fun all that stuff was!

Good to see they have not gone up that much. Back in the 70's the helmet was $150. Paint was another $100 and my ABC's were $500 a set. :)

I have a hard time dealing with anyone that will tell me how to ride when they never want me to tell them how to carry.....
just making a point... that being said I wear a helmet 99% of the time I ride... I also wear gloves 99% of the time... some times I don't .. but when I don't I only hurt ME.
don't tell me how to ride. I don't tell you how to drive.
I don't wear a helmet when I ride and don't wear any other protective gear very often either. I will wear a jacket and gloves if it is cold. I am aware of the risk I take every time I get on my motorcycle. If I didn't want to take the risk, I wouldn't ride. I have no problem with people who wear a helmet or other protective gear but I also respect the right of the individual who chooses not to do so as he is only endangering himself and not others.

If you have a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet.
I've worn it all from shorts and t-shirt to fully decked out in gear, I'll take fully decked anytime. I'm still here to talk about it.
The dumbest thing I ever heard anyone say in the helmet law battles of the past was, "I won't wear a helmet because wearing a full face helmet will break your collar bone in a accident". This was said to me by the president of the local Abate chapter in Costa Mesa, CA in 1976.

That would be me, when I was riding my Busa. I did find out the sythetic jacket with leather worked really good. I also learned that my head was hard enough to dent the pavement. It was really interesting to me that my ER bill and the bill to fix the bike were within $25 of each other.

What? The thread is about "idiots" who spend 400 on a helmet but don't wear anything else. He wasn't telling anyone how to ride he was making a logical point. If you are going to wear anything make sure it's a helmet. If you get in a wreck at 20 mph the scrapes likely won't be bad but one little oopsie and you hit your head wrong and you're dead. That's why some only wear a helmet. It's not very smart but it's a hell of a lot better than no helmet at all.

True, as long as he has health insurance and a job to pay the deductible then I completely agree with you
I personally choose to buckle and wear gear but I don't think there should be laws (federal especially) mandating it. We need to stop interfering with Darwinism because the gene pool is awfully dirty & due for some bleach. Let's remove some of the laws protecting the dumb people from themselves and just let nature run it's course.

Off the subject but what were your best times and trap speeds? What mods?

I ran a mid-high tens, cant remember what my trap speed was but well over a buck, however the bike was capable of more than I was for sure. It had a full ceramic coated Termignoni exhaust, K&N, and Ducati race map on the comp, misc. things like clutch pack ect.. that didn't have much effect on 1/4 times. Really not a drag bike obviously but was a hoot to run down the 1/4, and a better to hoot to run at the LVMS road race course.
Shouldn't a mid-high 10 second pass be some where around 130 mph in the traps?

Sounds about right, as I said well over a buck. I probably have a few time slips around in a box or file folder somewhere.I wanna say it was closer to 140ish just because I couldn't launch a bike for shit, so I railed the hell out of it afterwards. GF almost wrecked the Triumph 675 at the line that day, goosed it a little to much and wheelied it, lol.
