I got an interesting e-mail from Walt Rauch after I posted that I'd be carrying a snubbie to Orlando. Walt got "caught out" after 9-11 caused all flights to be cancelled. He had to drive across the country with his J-frame and a baby Glock. As a result of that experience, Walt now only travels with full-sized guns:
Consider this though, what handgun would you want to have if you had to find your way home after another 9-11?
...
A full-sized gun is a pain as it takes up space and adds weight to my bag and I never carry it at the other end of the trip - but damn it! - I know I'll have a full sized handgun to work with if needed!
I gave it some thought and decided he was right. Instead of one of the snubs, I packed the SIG 225, my regular carry gun, along with four mags and an extra box of Hornady 124-gr JHPs I had lying around the gun room. So there. BTW, Walt's also carrying a SIG 225 to the Sunshine State.

Can someone explain this to me, because I'm confused.

I recently saw the "Snubbies" episode of Shooting Gallery. Supposedly expert after expert recommends a J-frame. Everybody who's anybody carries a J-frame.

J-frame, J-frame, J-frame.

And now this? "Oops, I guess I was wrong".

WTF?

I carry my J-Frame for size and weight. If I was going to travel farther than normal, I sure as hell wouldn't want MORE weight to carry. Ummm, dunno dude, I'll stick to my J-Frame. Maybe carry 4 speed strips instead of 2, but that's about it. Karl.

Handguns are by their very nature much more convenient than powerful

The majority of civillians carry "just in case" and if truly pressed for an answer would probably say their odds of having to use it were low

I think what W.R. was referring to was his choice when suddenly he felt like he was much more likely to need a weapon.

And in the crystal clear moment of clarity he wanted "more gun"

People that go in harms way tend to view J-frames as a BUG..not a choice for primary

Scott Reitz (LA SWAT and TTS) had an excellent piece in a recent issue of SWAT on off-duty carry where he admonished those officers that revert to a pocket gun when not "on the job" as being too complacent .

If a pistol is like a fire extinguisher...just in case....then I guess some people just want to be ready for a bigger fire

Interestingly enough...I saw an AAR on a back up gun class and one comment was;

"In my way of thinking the Glock shooters were cheating! "

Because FIGHTING with the little autopistol is so much easier

On the other hand, the J frame is my carry everywhere gun. When I travel to Texas or other states where I'm likely to shoot in IDPA or similar I'll pack my full size P220 or P226. At this point I haven't really taken along a gun just to exercise my CCW reciprical rights so if the shtf scenario occurs and I'm in one of the states where I shoot IDPA I've got it covered. In other states, well its a mixed bag. My work usually takes me to either Washington DC (can't carry there) or Kalifornia (can't carry there).
