From the section on life and property:

The United States prioritizes the right to keep and bear arms over the protection of citizens' lives and personal security and exercises lax firearm possession control, causing rampant gun ownership. The US people hold between 35 percent and 50 percent of the world' s civilian-owned guns, with every 100 people having 90 guns (Online edition of the Foreign Policy, Jan 9, 2011). According to a Gallup poll in October 2011, 47 percent of American adults reported that they had a gun. That was an increase of six percentage points from a year ago and the highest Gallup had recorded since 1993. Fifty-two percent of middle-aged adults, aged between 35 and 54, reported to own guns, and the adults' gun ownership in the south region was 54 percent (The China Press, Oct 28, 2011). The New York Times reported on Nov 14, 2011, that since 1995, more than 3,300 felons and people convicted of domestic violence misdemeanors had regained their gun rights in the state of Washington and of that number, more than 400 had subsequently committed new crimes, including shooting and other felonies (The New York Times, Nov 14, 2011).

I'm sure the "100 people owning 90 guns" ratio would defiantly be thrown askew if their demographics came from this forum. Members that have been involved in a tragic boating accident aside....... :D

Who gives a flying fuck what China thinks???

Like they are such a stalwart human rights oriented country.

"Hi, we're China. We believe in forced abortions and have probably murdered more of our own citizens in the last 100 years than most of the rest of the world combined. But enough about us. We want to talk to you about America's horrible civil rights record, specifically their insistence that their citizens have an inherent right to defend themselves against those that would otherwise do them harm."

Like Bert said, who gives a flip what China thinks? Eff 'em. Commie bastards.

I find this very disturbing, we only own 35% to 50% of the worlds civilian owned guns? You guys need to get your checkbooks out and we need to get the import rules changed :)

This boating incident pops up from time to time....

I would give 2 squirts of piss for their human rights record.

When my guns fell over the side of the boat they didn't sink, because they were sitting on a pile of guns from a previous accident.

I think its more like 100 people own 900 guns. Especially around here.

Nice. I agree.

Abuse of power, brutal enforcement of law and overuse of force by US police have resulted in harassment and hurt to a large number of innocent citizens and have caused loss of freedom of some people or even deaths. And in China one can live free and be a happy member of the state. ;)
I think its more like 100 people own 900 guns. Especially around here. I think your a little low. Not many have the "small" safe at home. :)

I'm doing my best to raise the average. Less than a 1:1 ratio is simply unacceptable.

Makes me proud, but we need to go get those gun ownership numbers up.

I must have missed the part where China actually said what they wanted the U.S. or the rest of the world to do about our rampant gun ownership.

We also have more motor vehicles per person than any other country in the world. Subsequently, we have more vehicular deaths than most other countries. Does that mean we are violating human rights by allowing citizens to possess and utilize automobiles?

China is tired of being the U.S. whipping boy for human rights violations. Frankly, I feel the same way about "human rights violations" that I do about "hate crimes." These types of things are subjective interpretations of concepts that do not translate cleanly across cultures in different stages of development.

I don't believe the U.S. will reply to this obvious distortion of statistics and flawed logic, but there is always a chance that someone pretty high up in the federal bureaucracy will feel compelled to apologize for another basic right that he believes the Founding Fathers got wrong. He is entitled to his opinion, just like I am entitled to believe he is dead wrong, again.

Be safe.

Good to know China is trying to keep tabs on all the american's that have guns. It's even better that they are discounting the number of guns owned.

I feel fairly certain that Ridge wasn't trying to say that we should be concerned with what China is reporting.

I've only started since March, but there are nine guns in the safe right now. Room for one more ;)

I don't see the issue here- if you look at the facts, it's not a bad picture- our citizenry is well armed... well, FOOK YEAH!! and SO WHAT!!!

what's the problem with that- they try to make a very weak statement about numbers like 3300 felons and 400 repeat offenders that had their rights reinstated? out of what, 150 Million gun owners?

If I were the average Chinaman, what I'd hear is that I'm not going to show up for the assignment to invade America (because there will be a rifle behind every blade of grass)

There are more firearms in this country than there are loyal patriots to carry them into battle (by far in some areas like Berkley) in defense of this country.

And the message that we should focus on this Memorial day- Those who died for this country is the reason we still have that right!

How many DV people were rail roaded and got their Rights taken away because of Gov BS? Why does china care?Oh yeah we owe them a bunch of money,so they could be the new landlords:)

amen. people who don't own guns apparently don't think other countries would love to control our resource rich land.

Winner!
The Landlord wants to gauge how hard it will be to evict the tenants.

More than likely this is a "leverage" piece, meant to illustrate to the rest of the world why the US needs to sign into the UN "Small Arms Treaty".....

"The United States prioritizes the right to keep and bear arms over the protection of citizens' lives and personal security.."

That's the point. It turns out it ISN'T better to give up liberties to gain a little temporary security.

Screw 'em... the UN became obsolete when we saw just how "effective" they were in Rwanda in 1994. Seriously, China needs to hear that story about a pot and a kettle, one called the other black... Can those aliens hurry up and get here already, I think humanity needs a nice wake up call- nothing better than another species telling us how stupid we look.
