No, that rifle is the biggest piece of crap since the Chauchat. I did Have one with a tactical stock, red dot and quad rail, but it was too muzzle heavy to clear rooms with.[Flower]

Handled many, shot one.

As soon as my membership in GCA is active, I will be buying one from CMP. Then in a couple of months another. And so on, and so on.....

An incredible piece of art, science and practicality all in one.

I just picked one up a couple weeks ago after wanting one for many years and just buying other firearms. After one trip to the range, I'm a HUGE fan!

It has become my FAVORITE rifle. I like the Garand above my other rifles which are some of the best of the current crop. The weight, feel, and accuracy of the Garand just seem to fit me.

I took it out, zeroed it and started shooting at a human-sized target at 300 meters and nailed that gong every time!

I was so comfortable with it I only shot maybe a total of 30 rounds and put it down.

It is an amazing rifle and definitely one I'm keeping.

There's a Mills belt rolled up in the helmet, and I have damn near enough 1918 U.S.C. Co. rounds, on stripper clips, to fill up the whole belt! Currently working on cleaning up those rounds, they were pretty corroded.

Need to replace a Winchester that I foolishly sold a few years back. Seeing some folks who are investing in M1s. Hard to fault their logic given the dwindling supply.

I've got 3 of them. 2 in '06, one in 7.62. One of the '06's I picked out at the CMP south store, a correct H&R. Stock's a little beat up, but it's beautiful to me! I haven't even had time to clean the cosmoline off of it, or take the tag off.

I still want an International...but so does everyone else who likes Garands...[Coffee]

My favorite rifle to shoot. At one time I had 11, but I cut back to a few best shooters after I stopped competing. I've put on NM front and rear sights, glass bedded the rifles and did a couple of other tuning tricks. They are X ring capable.

I don't have an H&R, but I do have the other USGI manufacturers. Dates range from prewar to the 1960s.

The Supermatch M1a will out shoot them, but not the M1a National Match.

rondog, what is wrong with the M1? I have lots of experience tinkering and tuning them.

I looked back in the thread. Is short stroking the problem? As long as you are using proper ammo and your chamber is smooth, that leaves gas cylinder or the operating rod as probable culprits. It is unlikely the port is clogged.

The first thing I would do is try the tilt test to check the operating rod.

Do you have any spare parts to try?

Love it. Bought it in 1989 for $185. Restocked it 5 years ago with a CMP stock set (way better that a Boyds). It gets buried with me.

Long story, but it's short-stroking. I'm sure I frigged it up somehow. Gonna try a new stock set and new springs, if that doesn't work it's going up to Chuckindenver. He refinished all the metal for me and did a superb job, so I'm certain it's nothing he did. But I repaired and refinished the stock at the same time, then reassembled it. And I'm a moron, so God only knows what I did to it. I already have a new Dupage stock set, and Orion 7 spring kit is on the way.

I've got lots of whining about it on the CMP forum you can read. But riddle me this Batman, are these brass markings on the bolt normal?

It was pretty popular among the local constabulary when I was a kid in the Philippines and then the Armalite kind of replaced it there. That sentence kind of dates me a bit!

Mine carries similar brass tracking Ron but not quite so heavy. Any indicators of the follower/arm dragging? As far as the short stroking check for signs of the operating rod binding and or rubbing the stock. Does it pass the "tilt test"?

The brass marks on the bolt are normal. This is just the bolt rubbing the cartridges in the clip as it cycles.

Passes every tilt test I could come up with, stock on, stock off, bolt, no bolt. I just can't find the problem. Got a spring kit on the way, and a new stock to oil up and put on. If it still doesn't work, I'm seeking professional help. Maybe a gunsmith too.

"The" tilt test: Remove the barrel and receiver group from the stock. Remove the recoil spring. Starting with the group level, with the rear of the receiver held from the top by one hand, the other SLOWLY pivots the barrel up. At about 30 degrees the bolt and operating rod should cycle freely open to full rear position of its own weight. Again, starting level with the bolt fully open pivot the barrel down slowly. At about 30 degrees down, the bolt should close of its own weight. Absolutely no binding should occur with either step. This test eliminates the possibility of a bent operating rod. You can do the same test with the group in the stock. That would tell you if there is stock or ferrel binding.

If not, you are left with an undersized operating rod tip, a worn or badly fitting gas cylinder, the cylinder not lining up with the gas port in the barrel, a partially plugged gas port, leaking cylinder plug as possibilities.

In your picture of the bolt, it looks like some kind of spring in the firing pin slot. There should not be a spring there. The firing pin free floats.

What is that spring that 10X mentioned in the firing pin "slot" in the bolt???

What is that spring that 10X mentioned in the firing pin "slot" in the bolt???

Some previous owner must have put that in there, I've since removed it. Other guys have said it's not uncommon, and won't hurt anything, but it ain't 'spoda be there so I took it out. I got my Orion 7 spring kit, and it's obvious my clip latch and clip eject springs were shot, by comparing them to the new ones. So I'm hoping that'll help.

I also finally dug out my 0-1" mic and telescoping gauges, and measured the bore of the gas cylinder. It's way oversized. Supposed to be .528, mine is .535-.536, so there's my problem right there. The piston is only .001 undersized, so I'm not gonna mess with it.

I've found a site called Garand Guy, and he offers rebuilt gas cylinders. He has them reamed out, then hard chromed, and finally honed to new spec at .528. If you send him your old cylinder, gas lock, gas plug, front sight, stacking swivel and screw, he'll send back a rebuilt cylinder with all those same parts, that have all been refinished with the same process, so they all match. The gas cylinder is stainless and won't take parkerizing, so making it black is a different process, and all the other parts get it too so they match.

Cost is $66 with your exchange parts, including shipping. No brainer to me! I couldn't buy a used cylinder in unknown condition for $66. I'm shipping them out in the morning.
