Ok, this was discussed last year and I want to get this going.

I am thinking about end of July, that way it will give us plenty of time to plan and get the rules and conditions in place and folks can plan for it.

So I am thinking July 21st.

We will need to work on the where, how etc.

$5 entry fee. ALL money will be paid back in cash prizes, First place gets 50% second place gets 30% third gets 20% I will donate some paracord stuff for prizes and some T-Shirts.

I think we will have two shoots, one restricted class, where there will be some very light and basic guidelines and rules, and then an open class, which will basically be a "run what ya brung" round.

All thoughts and volunteers are welcome, so if you have an idea of how to set up the guidelines post up and we will use it.

If I am in town I am in.. We need to set some limits on the type and volume of gasses that will be allowed, or not....

This sounds like it could be a ton of fun. Let us know on classes I might have to talk to the guys at the shop and see what we could put together.

Yes, for the restricted class there will be a few loose guidelines such as, propellant, size of tub, size of projectile, etc. things like that. The open class.....well, that will be a whole different story.

What about a homemade Golfball cannon using pyrodex? :D

Were we talking about having someone draw up a release form?
Explosives can be......well......FUN. [ROFL1]

Yeah someone posted on the old thread that was lost during the crash that was going to draw something up.

Can I fire potatoes out of this:
http://i692.photobucket.com/albums/vv281/CrufflerSteve/Cannon%20Shooting%20May%208th%202010/bigshot1.png

They'd be flash cooked, if you don't mind a little bit of sulpher. Because it is sawtooth rifled it could peel them on the way out.

I will take all the help I can get.

Any suggestions on how to create some basic guidelines

Scoring based upon distance and accuracy, you should also get a point if you don't blow yourself up [Coffee]

Nive, I like that. So most folks will have a point straight away.

I thought there would be more interest in this, maybe it is not as cool as I thought it was gonna be

I thought there would be more too... But there never was... That's why I didn't bring it back up... But in the old thread... We discussed potato skeet...

could i use a potato gun that has a bottle of map gas and oxygen on it? hahaha

I think my home brew golf ball cannon is out. Can't ever find the ball. Pretty sure it cleared 1/2 mile.

How will distance be measured? People standing down range?

J

I'll volunteer to help run officiate. I'll even help propose some rules later today. I used to build these a bunch when I was younger.

I like the idea of accuracy and distance. With distance, you do one point per yard over 100 (or some number). With accuracy, you do a noticeable object. Touching is, say 300 points, and you lose 3 points per yard away from the point.

Any explosions or dangerous malfunction = disqualification.

Ideally, you weight distance and accuracy equally. So 50% of the score is distance, and 50% is accuracy.

Just putting this out there as a strawman for people to beat on.

Competition Entries:
1. Limit of 1 gun per team.
2. No set limit on number of team members per team.
3. At least one gun from each team has to have been made by a member of that team.
4. A maximum of 4 warm up shots will be allowed prior to competition.

Gun Production Regulations:
1. Fuel
1. A pressure above 1 ATM (15psi) may not exist in the combustion chamber prior to ignition
2. Permitted Fuels consist of:

Hairspray
Ether (“Starter Fluid”)
Organic Fuels
Compressed Air

3. Disallowed Fuels

Acetylene
Solid & Liquid Fuels (ie. Black Powder, Gasoline)

2. Chamber and Barrel Size

Maximum barrel length of 36"
Maximum overall length 60"

3. Safety

Chamber must be sealed prior to ignition.
Potato must be loaded into the barrel prior to fuel being added to the chamber

4. Ammunition

Shot must consist of solid potato randomly chosen by a member of another team
Shot may be dyed if desired (dying is useful in determining what shot belongs to your team, which leads to more accurate recording of attempts)

not sure if this would work with compressed air/gas guns... typically a firing chamber is pre-pressurized though a low volume, high pressure valve of some sort... and then the spud is fired by opening a large volume valve of some sort, usually a 1/4 turn ball valve..

or would a compressed air gun be exempt because it has neither a combustion chamber, nor ignition?

Good call.

How about we just limit guns operating on compressed air/gas to a specific PSI? Any particular number sound good? 75/100/150/200? Or do we say that compressed gas guns have to be manually inflated (e.g. manual tire pump/squeeze box, etc) - and then put a time limit on how long you are allowed to 'inflate' for. 30/60 seconds?

Are we set on a date for a this? I know 21st of july was suggested but is that firm? Just want to know so I can try to get it off work if it is on the 21st plus I need some build time.

compressed air (pneumatic) guns are already at a disadvantage to exploding gas guns,

if it were me, i would not limit compressed air designed at all..and simply state that if your junk blows up and kills you, your disqualified

Awesome information Jayock and asmotao! I like it so far.

I will add a poll to see what day is better. I will give 4 options and we will simply pick th eday that is chosen most.

compressed air (pneumatic) guns are already at a disadvantage to exploding gas guns,

Why is that? My pneumatic gun fires every single time I press the trigger, ie: don't have to keep clicking some BBQ igniter hoping it'll go boom. My pneumatic gun also shoots farther than any combustion gun as well.

I also control the exact pressure that the PVC sees, not just hoping some random spray of hairspray doesn't over pressure it.

I also don't understand why you'd make the pneumatic guys manually create the pressure, if that's the cause you should make the gas guys mine for their own fuel.

I was just looking for a way to keep someone from showing up with a 5000 PSI tank in a 5" expansion chamber. [AR15]

Or waiting for someone to get their little car air compressor up to 100 PSI.

If we do have a PSI limit I guess we are going to need to find a way to monitor it..

But the fewer the rules the easier things will be.

Yeah I dont want crazy outlandish rules, this is simply for fun and camaraderie. Just an excuse for us to get out and have a good time.

As for location, I was initially thinking somewhere out in Pawnee National Grasslands, but that is not set in stone. If someone else has a good place lets do it.

Maybe we can make a weekend of it like we were all planning last year and do a group hang out at the south site and do a clean up then also.

sounds like you already have this competition won then... ;)

How far does everyone think we need? Is there enough room at the south site for this?

Can we incorporate a weekend hang out and do a clean up of the south site also? This will just be one of the weekend events.

better watch out on trying to give away stuff to coar15 members or trying to hold an event of any kind . someone will cancel it for you at the last min , get on your ass about giving stuff away and most will just put you down for trying to do something nice for the shooting community ....... sorry i learned a lot last summer and im having a hard time including anyone in my reindeer games . .......................................yep jaded by COAR15 members !

im new here, but, i want to let you know.. if you want to give anything away to me, i promise not to give you a hard time about it, get on your ass, or put you down.

in fact, im not really picky about WHAT free stuff is given to me, and for the record, i wear a 3xl T-shirt... just in case.

If there is still interest we can still do it!
