View Full Version : Modding a Mosin?
So I have been toying around the idea of modding my Mosin. Anyone have any thought or experience with this? Worth it or waste of money? I enjoy the fact that it is a high powered but low cost round.
Some ideas-

I built a real freak of nature about a year ago. The timney trigger is crsp and light (like you'd expect from timney. The installation was a pain for me because I was finishing the wooden laminate stock.
The barrel I picked up is a modded uk-59 (not sure if that is the right designation).
I had the picatinny rail mounted by a gunsmith. It's a few moa off, but you can make the adjustment pretty easily.
I also did the bent bolt mod, welded it myself.
All in all, I never expect to get a dime for this from another person, but it was fun to build and is a blast to shoot.

Can o' worms. Some purists will puke on your shoes at the thought of hacking one up, but some other guys have made some damn nice custom rifles out of 'em. Might want to get a second one first, just so's you'll still have an "original" one. Any D&T scope mount and good scope will require a modified bolt with the turned-down handle, but those are available on eBay and everywhere else.
It's your rifle, and they're not exactly rare or valuable, so knock yerself out. Might want to check out the Mosin section at Gun & Game.com, or 7.62x54R.net, there's lots of Mosin owners at those sites that have done some nice things with them. Just make sure yours isn't one that DOES have some value, like a Finn M39 or a hex receiver'd model. A basic wartime Russian rifle? Have at it.
Mine is a pre-war 1938, so I'm not messing it up. It actually has some nice machining and finish to it, whereas the wartime-era rifles were cranked out as fast as possible and lots of corners were cut, the machine work is much rougher. Oh, and I bought mine on sale at Big 5 for $69.95! They haven't been that low since.
ITS NOT A FREAK ITS A SUPER FREAK
Hows it shoot?

I humbly acknowledge my superior.
Mine shoots fairly well. Under an MOA, which is as good as it can hope for with me behind it. I haven't had the chance to stretch it beyond 100 yet, but my prairie dog trip approaches.

I wish I had snatched up one of the uk59 barrels when they were cheap. Also on your stock for just a few more dollars you could go with one of these http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/Boyds-Mosin-Nagant-Socks-s/172.htm
Other than that rock solid is good to go and you can do a lot to a mosin trigger without going the timney route.
I have a chinese type 53 thats scrubbed and has a shot out barrel thats a prime candidate for a bull barrel.
I might have kamanator make me up one of his frames.
I gotta figure out what I'm going to do with the trigger as well.

The rifle on the right is my modded Mosin. The one on the left is one of my type 53's. I am trying to figure out the best scope mount to use on the modded rifle.

Looks good!!
The easiest ones are the ones that mount into the existing rear sight leaf block

Theres long and short for the scope you want to use.

The best ones I have dealt with are the "Rock Solid" mounts. Kind of a pita to install and sometimes they need steel bedding to the receiver but as the name implies they are a solid mount. The bolt handle requires alteration as well.
I have looked at the rock solids. My bolt is bent but I am not sure if it is bent enough for the mount. I am definitley paying somebody to mount it. My drilling and tapping in the past has not been so precise.

The bolt handle needs to be cut, extended a tad and rewelded. You also need to make sure you have the optic you are going to use as the mount/scope combo must be complete at the time of mounting to correctly align it prior to drilling/tapping.
Give me a holler if we can be of assistance.
Here's one i did a while back with the Monte Carlo stock

I saw one the other day on armslist with a 16" bull barrel and compensator duracoated OD Green. It was pretty sweet. Wish I would have had the cash to pick it up.
Think after chewing on it, the categories I am impartial to are the sight / squeeze portion of the rifle. Anyone find a cheaper trigger option than the Timney?
FWIW - if you remove the rear sight assembly from a 91/30, there's a 3/8" dovetail on top of the barrel, and you can clamp a 3/8" scope mount on there for a .22 or air rifle. This is a Leapers mount I got from Optics Planet. I don't know the Item Number offhand, but I'm sure it's here in an old thread somewhere, I've mentioned this before. But you have to use a long-eye-relief scout scope.

I bet if you spun that leapers mount around backward you could almost use a normal scope on there. It would take from you 1" forward to one inch back

You can do this but you need to get the bent, turned down bolt handle. Thats why I went with the long eye relief scope, I couldnt find a bent bolt

Nope, wouldn't work. It's too far forward.

Try ebay, that's where I got mine.

Finished mine 2 weeks ago. I love how it came out, unfortunately my son loved it more and he does not have a hunting rifle yet. It is now his.
He is really happy with it.

Yeah I saw that one, you send him your bolt and he reworks if for you. He and another guy do it on ebay but they are basically bashing each other in their ads, thats a turn off for me and I am not impressed by either of them.
Thanks though

Just talked to Burt today and it sounds like his bolts are like the Russian turned down bolts, I'm going to take my sporterized carbine to him for his bolt treatment sometime next week
I can't wait for that elusive BP Tactical guy to finish my Mosin !! It is a challange to find him and then the security forces are a PITA to deal with!!

I'm also interested in this. I saw a video from ShotShow talking about this stock and the use of magazines and it seems worth it if I can find another $100 Mosin. Best I've seen recently is about $130-140.

On the Youtube channel IraqiVeteran8888 Eric down in GA at Moss Pawn and Guns does a bunch of DIY vids on Mosin Modding. Rock Solid Ind. is doing preorders for a M24 scope rail esque setup for a M91/30.

Havent shot it yet. Full blown review on the way. Buddy has an extra one with 2 10 round mags for sale

First time shooting the rifle with an optic mounted! Aimpoint Pro 2 MOA with a single low Warne 30mm ring. I took the rifle with me to work and it being a weekday I had enough time to boresight and shoot it.
After boresighting the rifle at 100yds I shot 5 rounds (148gr handloads PPU brass 43.5 gr of vargot).
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/08/yvejejuv.jpg
Next I moved to 50 yards and had some fun shooting various kinds of ammo. Getting 2 rounds touching at 50yds with a flier was standard fare for both myself and another shooter.
Moving out to 100 yards and shooting (174 grain .312 open tip sierra match kings over 43 gr of Vargot) this was the only group I got with the rifle as I ran out of time, the range got busy so time to go back to work. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/08/u6ezyhab.jpg all shooting was done off of a bench using a Hornady delta rest. The other shooter was a former Marine sniper wgo served in Vietnam with the 1st Marine Division. The trigger is still standard Russian that has been polished up a bit. I dont have a scale but the trigger has to be at least 10lbs! Heres some videos of the rifle in its current form with a SWFA SS 6x42 MIL/MIL scope.

FWIW: Today's Gearhog deal is an aluminum muzzle brake (clamp on) from Witt Industries for the M91/30: http://www.gearhog.com/?did=67552
Anyone have any experience with a clamp on brake? I read a lot of people saying "it's a stupid idea", but not much 1st hand experience.
Ive seen them walk on 22 and 223 guns. Putting them on a mosin is a waste of money
Also aluminum with tiny holes on a rifle with that much muzzle blast is almost guaranteed to cause particles to be ripped off the brake.

Big, heavy, fugly........don't know if it works.
I would imagine as slender the barrel on a Mosin is the harmonics have to be interesting.
So far Ive yet to see a decent clamp on mosin muzzle device work out real well
