Just got a postcard from the city of Aurora. Looks like as of June 1st they are going to begin collecting sales tax of 3.75% on all soda and candy sold in the city.

Gotta pay for all the new Caprice and Magnum cop cars somehow...

Had nothing to do with the new cars, this is just how you convince people to diminish the consumption of something you find offensive. Haven't you been reading this forum?

Has Mayor Bloomberg been doing some consultation for the city of Aurora?

A sin tax on sugar that the city will reap the benefit for. [Roll1]

My bet is that businesses bordering Aurora's boundary lines will see an increase in candy/soda sales.

That's pretty optimistic. Drugs are illegal and expensive and there are still lots of addicts.

Even if they do, the one thing this law doesn't help with is making people responsible for their actions. IMO, that's one of the biggest problems in America: everybody wants their rights, nobody wants the responsibility that comes with those rights.

The more the government does for people, the less capable they become to do things for themselves. It becomes a downward spiral.

Yes, because it's certainly lowered instances of health related problems due to cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption.

Oh wait.

Well I don't smoke or drink too much so those taxes didn't hurt me one bit...

I don't drink soda.. I don't gorge myself on candy.. .maybe some M&Ms every once in a while..

But for the people who drink a 12 pack+/day .. they'll start to feel it eventually... I work with people like that.. fat lazy slobs who consume sugar like it's a life giving force...

The majority of people I know who consume massive quantities of sugar are skinny lazy slobs. This string bean I know is in the hospital for neglecting his nutritional needs so much he had a seizure.

Its easy to pin it on large people because you can see the weight on them, but it's b.s. to assume that because someone is overweight that they gorge themselves on sugar. Yes, the people at work that you know, that's valid. But I'm sure that there are just as many "regular weight folk" who consume just as much.

The point is, people encourage or see the merit of one type of restrictive legislation that doesn't apply to their personal life, then cry in outrage when there are weapons taxes, registration taxes, or whatever else it might be that is impacting their life. Bogus laws are bogus laws, and this is an example of that.

But it is about the "man berries!" Can't we do it just to save our "man berries." Even if we were only to save one "man berry", wouldn't it be worth it?

I remember the scene from the movie Gandhi when he helped make salt on the salt pans on the river. This was a protest against the British tax on salt. If the government can tax salt, air, water, they control life.

I think we need an ammo tax. That would force all those gun nuts to shoot less. It won't effect too many people, so what's the big deal?

Sell the corn futures. Most all sodas and candy use high fructose corn syrup these days.
