One of the things in life i greatly enjoy is camping. With current events being what they are the thought of not being able too check media for news of a zombie outbreak once a day makes me nervous. How can you get news at your vehicle in the backwoods? Often radio stations are not there or they are only playing music. Satelite? Big antenna? SW?

I got a text from a buddy of mine while I was at the top of Pole Hill Road to let me know that the outbreak had started in Miami. Its unfortunate that I won't be able to rely on cell coverage.

Everybody knows zombies already run the media!

Smoke signals man, smoke signals reflected off of tinfoil hats will be the only reliable means of communication.[Coffee]

AM radio ............ DUHHHHHH[Tooth]
I have scanned through am and fm many many times without a hit. Manually moving through the frequencies usually yields a weak hit - usually on FM- more broadcast power. I have also driven to the top of ridges to get radio. The trouble is even when you get a usable signal its music, i want news.

Where can I get a smoke signal tinfoil hat rig? Perhaps a inexpensive one finely crafted by artisans in a economic expansion zone in the PRC?[Swim]

In case of emergency do not depend on the posters above.

However we were on top of the divide when 9/11 happened and did not know about if for 10 days.
There is an AM staion that does reach alot of remote places, a CB radio can pretty much be picked up anywhere, we know have a couple.

XM/Sirius is probably the most user friendly option for daytime news. Some research on shortwave news radio stations (BBC? VOA?) might help you decide. At night, you should be able to pick AM stations from far away (atmospheric bounce effect).

I went to the xm/sirius website prior to posting this but i couldnt find a coverage map. Does their coverage generally get out in the national forest?

There covergae is all over the US.
I have working in the canyons of Utah, 60 miles of dirt road and 100 miles from town
and always had a good signal for my Sirius.
I swear by sirius and have worked from west Texas to North Dakota and the only
problems I had was I wore out the receivers from over use. Meaning I put prob 100k miles 2 years in a row driving to and from rigs.

It's a freakin' satellite man! As long as you've got a view of the sky it'll work.

Pretty much, if you can get a decent GPS signal, you can get XM/Sirius

When I am camping I avoid every bit of contact with the outside world for me its about getting away from it all.

it's funny... when ever my guys and I go camping,, we have to make a pact to turn off the phones because they all get service in these remotes areas now lol..

been going to this one spot for over 10 years and we didnt have to worry about service until probably last year.

point is.. I could always just check my phone lol

The only times we had a phone out on Memorial weekend was to drive out and call to give directions and to use My Tracks run and mark trails on the ATV.

My hand crank AM/FM radio will get AM anywhere I've camped in Colorado.

Or just watch for airplanes. If you stop seeing them, something bad probably happened.

go to channel 13 on your handheld radio. I make daily updates at 2100 hours.
