I just bought an 03 outback with 140k on the clock it runs good slight tick when it is cold but goes away as it warms up.
the main issue that i have is when coming to a complete stop the engine vibrates like the torque converter is not free wheeeling completely if you let off the brake and let it creep forward about a foot and than reapply the brake everything is kosher. the level is good but i do not know the age of the fluid. I will probably start with a fluid change and see if it fixes it. If it does not is this a common issue? I am a complete noob on subaru's and automatic transmissons in general. this is the first auto vehicle I have ever owned.

Normally if the TC doesnt release it stalls like a stick with no clutch, was a big problem with GM cars for a few years. If its vibrating? Generally "in my experience" with auto trans problems (was a trans tech for 9 years) if its high mileage and hasnt been serviced properly changing the fluid may cause more problems and flushing it will kill it. The fluid traps in a lot of the friction material off the clutches and once thats gone, its gone. Could try a fluid/filter change? The TC may be nearing the end of its life as well?

I have done fluid/filter changes on vehicles then after restarting and topping off they wouldnt move.

was a big problem with GM cars for a few years. My T350C went at 55K. 1980 Grand Am. I do not think it liked the 455 I put in place of the 301. [Beer]

Keep an eye on Craigslist. I am sure with all the 'Roo's getting stolen you can pick up a STI or WRX transmission[Bang]
Cheap

Common problem I see on some of these is there awd and when you have worn tires on one set of axles it throws the transfer case off.

Meaning if you have a good set up front and ones that just barley pass inspection in the rear it shudders.
They may be the same size tire but if you wrap a tape measure around them you might have about an inch difference-and subbie trannies dont like that.

I would change the filter and the trany fluid first before trying anyting else. Those things have a trany filter and can be temperamental every now and then.
