View Full Version : What about Steel

I didn't see anything specific about targets in the range rules. Does anybody bring steel targets to the shoots? I used to have some steel plates with chains that allowed me to hang them as targets, although I'd be hard pressed to find them since my move. There's also a proliferation of new swinging/rotating targets that don't need to be manually reset. In pistol matches we have to be careful of the distance from these things, but rifle distances aren't a problem.

Yes, 2nd childhood has one, and brings it.

I hope the shoot on the 10th next month doesn't get weathered out. I've got a brand new XCR that needs to be broken in properly, gas system adjusted, and sighted in.

I've got Troy BUIS on it right now and an EOTech on order.

I have no problem with steel targets as long as you set them up at least 50 yrds. down range. Other wise it can splatter back and hit you or other shooters it happend to me at a north shoot and cut my lip.

.22 spinner targets are an exception.

eyes and ears..

a couple of use use steel targets to complement the clay pigeons as targets that don't run out (unless someone shoots through that little itty bitty hole and cuts the strap.. :)

fine as long as they are far enough back. if they hang angle down so the splash goes down, much better.

That's why I mentioned the distance issue with steel targets. I've gotten some splatter from the poppers at IDPA shoots myself so I know the problem.

I'm new to the "Black Rifle" game, how do they work on the typical 22 spinners, are they too powerful and ruin them? Are there spinners that will handle high power rounds including .308?

.22 spinner targets are an exception.I got hit with some splatter at a south shoot when someone tried out their AR on a .22 spinner at close range. I had my head turned to the side and it cut my left nostril. Thank goodness for safety glasses.

Let me clarify when I said .22 spinners are an exception I meant you actually shoot them with a .22 rim fire.

If you want to destroy them with a .223 round or other put them out at least 50 yrds. [pirate]

ask 7idl about what .223 does to a .22 spinner   (No, it wasn't me, but I seem to hear about it at just about every other shoot).

I can show you what .308 does to a .22 spinner, though.

So does anybody know of a spinner-type target or any other self re-setting type that will survive with .223 or .308?

There's a guy who attends the Tanner shows who sells different spinner targets (think he's out of Aurora). I talked with him once and yes, he said he has some different targets that can handle those bigger rounds. He has metal and also this type of heavy duty polymer target that he was big on.

I grabbed his card but am not sure where it's at. Someone else on these forums brought him up, so try a search. I'll poke around myself and see if I can come up with his contact info.

Carl up at Bailey Guns has a bunch of spinner targets that can take .308 I was looking at them last time I was up that way.

Does Carl work for Dave Humke? Humke I thought was the owner of Bailey's/Glock Parts?

I have a couple of swinging targets from this place.
The targets hold up well to high power fire but the frames are soft steel and can't stand too many hits. I like them overall.

If it's the Dave I am thinking of he works for Carl or has part time. Carl owns Bailey Guns. Dave is also a class 3 dealer and he works at the sportsmans wharehouse on south wadsworth by southwest plaza.

I don't know if we are talking about the same Dave as I don't know his last name. I would be willing to bet we are though.
