View Full Version : Let's get a thread going on "popular gun culture"

I'm talking about the typical run of the mill stuff you hear. It can be true, false, or hyped out of proportion.

One of the most common popular mistakes is calling a magazine a clip.

There's also the belief that filing down a firing pin will cause a gun to shoot full auto.

Perhaps my personal favorite is whole "thing" of gun dealers having illegal machine guns, explosives, silencers, et cetera "in the back" of the shop.

What are some of your favorites?

Every round fired hits exactly where the bad guy is and it is an instant kill shot.

The Nagant does work well suppressed. The cylinder shoulders up against the frame / bbl sealing it off as good as a semi would.

Not entirely false for two instances.

One was article by Massad Ayoob from ages back where a LEO approached a suspect lying on the ground not moving the suspect had a SBS hidden and shot at him from mere feet. The LEO was off his feet and flew back 2-3 feet landing on his back. He survived as he was wearing his armor but not with out having injuries; broken ribs etc.

Second one have you seen a 90 lb women firing a shotgun for the first time? the target didnt fly but she sure did...................

Actually it depends on the type of burglar, there was a self defense story in American Rifleman where an old couple heard noises downstairs and he cycled the pump shotgun, then heard scrambling noises downstairs. The would be burglar got scared and ran out the door through the screen door (so scared felt it was easier to go through it).

In the dark and you hear that noise...................you know you have to deal with a "shotgun"............if not prepared shit my pants.[Coffee]

There is no way something the size and weight of a marble is going to take a 200 pound man and push him backwards. No matter how fast it's going when it hits him. He might jump backwards from fear or shock but he isn't going to be pushed, shoved, or thrown backwards from the impact of the projectile.

Hey I just mentioned the story I didn't say he "FLEW" back, the article did with fellow LEO account of what happened , between the action of the situation anyone watching it happen it would appear he flew back due to the blast, he was according to the story wearing armor. The moral of the story from the great Ayoob always confirm your suspect and have someone cover you while you check to see if they are "faking" it.

It would be interesting to see on myth buster a 200lb "armored" object being shot by a shotgun 2 feet away.............do you think the blast would move the object????

Well, you can make yourself a known target to your potential assailant if you like. Me? I want my potential assailant's first indication that something's gone terribly wrong for him/her to see a muzzle flash and hear the sound of gunfire.

As for the rest...simple physics. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Now the neighbors want CCW permits. WTF? Like that would do any good. Everything happened on your own property anyway. Same folks that told me "The CCW is just going to get you in a lot of trouble!" I was confirming that there was truth that "hearing a pump cycle" can deter a burglar simply as there was a true story on it.

In my CC class they showed a video of a guy wearing a vest standing on 1 leg and shot him point blank to show when shot the bullet doesn't knock you down it's more of a reaction. I always thought when shot you got knocked down regardless. I'm sure most when shot it hurts enough to fall but I am just saying. When I was looking for Buckshot for my 20GA a guy behind the counter of a local store asked me why. I explained I wanted it to use in my home defense gun. His exact words " Hell all you need is birdshot. If you hit them with a round of that at 15 feet or less all those little pellets will cut them right into 2 pieces and stop them dead in thier tracks."

So I had to ask where he saw that little bit of info.

" Hell anyone that knows guns knows that all you need is birdshot. Dont even need anything bigger than a .410 really"

So I went somewhere else to buy my ammo.

Michael Mann directed films. He is a stickler for accuracy. He even used a USPSA GM shooter in the first year of his Miami Vice tv series on an episode so the shooting scene could be used in real time. Its the one where the limo driver kills the drug lord and then shoots an off duty cop that trys to arrest him.

One that I like is Underworld (with only about the hottest woman in the world of course), has those fully automatic pistols (not sure what they are or are supposed to be) that seem to hold about 50 rounds before empty - even though the CLIP (hahaha, had to say that - and yes, I hate when people use that term as well) is an ordinary handgun size. She pulls the trigger for ten or fifteen seconds, just spraying before empty.

And, along those lines, how about in the movies when they "spray and pray" and hit all sorts of bad guys? The way they shoot I could drive my truck between rounds!

Or when they fire autos and they stay perfectly on sights with it - no three round bursts but just full auto to empty mags.

Or how it seems that most full auto shots in the movies appear to be loaded with tracer rounds. First off - yea, whatever and secondly "hey bad guy, I'm over H-E-R-E!"

Or the 90 pound (soaking wet) waifs who are throwing around weapons that a 200lb guy would tire out on - and they never get spun around by the massive recoil (hello Angelina Jolie...)

Ranger
06-10-2012, 13:55
Just thought of another one that I see Angelina and Kate do a lot (yea, I know them by first name, what of it?)... Loading mags back into their weapon(s) in mid air. I see this on the "super hero gunslinger" movies where the dump their mag, then single handedly put a new mag in just by reaching back behind them and perfectly seating their weapon onto a mag (i.e, Jolie in Tomb Raider, Beckensale in Underworld)

To be perfectly honest, I had to watch those moves three or four times because all I saw was Kate Beckinsale in seriously tight leather - I didn't even know it was a vampire movie until like the 3rd time! She can be my maker anytime :D

Here is another one I love, the good guy is on one side of the wall, the bad guy on the other and no matter what when the good guy unloads his mag into the wall he will hit the bad guy every single time.

Better still (and this is only mildly related), I love how the bad guys have the gun to the good guys head and have to have this massive dialog about how they are about to kill you rather than just pull the trigger and get it over with - hell, I think even I could escape a deadly situation if my killer just had diarrhea of the mouth about how I was going to die right that moment!
