I don't have the funds to just go out and buy one of those high dollar smokers and was thinking about building something like this

has anyone tried it?

I built one at my uncles about 3 years ago. When it was all said and done it would have been cheaper to buy instead of build. We went a little over the top though.

Till you bump it, then it's 60-70 down the toilet.
If I was an apartment dweller I would consider it.

true, but it's just one piece though right. Replacing a terracotta pot isn't that expensive

whatever that guy did doesn't look like it'll take too much time..but still i agree time is sensitive

The "bullet" type smokers are only $50 or so. $75 for electric.
I don't see how making one would be that much cheaper unless you are looking to go all out on something fancy. My POS half rusted out electric unit has served me well for years.
I know it's electric, but It is nice just to set the temp and not have to worry about it. It smokes just as well as a traditional smoker.
Yup

awesome man!
what did you use for the heat element?
that shot glass on top, is that a functional? (controlling exhaust)
or functional just for the cook?[Beer]
I built my own a year or so ago.

Costed Way less than any similar sized at the store I could find. If you know someone that can do a little welding for you, it can be done pretty reasonable. ymmv

i used a cheap hot plate disassembled it and extended the leads so i could palce the element inside the pot the aluminum stand has the hot plate body in it. and i control both heat and smoke with the shot glass. the only problem i had with it was changing out the chips is a major pain in the ass. you have to pull the top pot pull up the grate with the meat on it. set it aside dump out the ashes fill wilth new and reassemble takes a while to gain the heat back again. i have a big green egg now.

damn, I might as well wait and bite the bullet til I can buy one.
Saw some "kamodo" type smoker at Costco the other day, I think it was the Vision Pro something for 550 could be wrong on price, but the size looked reasonable.
even though the egg isn't digital, how do you like it as far as ease of temp controlling?

Amazing. ceramic holds heat so well you use very little for coals compared to a metal smoker. on you figure the quirks it smokes/grills like a dream.

Did you spring for the xl egg with all the side fix-ens?

just a medium guy. perfect for a house of 2 with occasional guests.
Last Father's Day I bought this at Bass Pro on sale. $170 or so, propane. I like the separate compartment for the fire/water/wood chips.

Built this cabinet for it with 2x2's, casters and plywood I had laying around. Gets it up off the ground to a working height, plus has storage for 2 bottles of propane and 2 big bags of wood chunks. And I can wheel it out to the middle of the patio to keep the smoke from coming in the house, then wheel it back into the corner by the porch out of the way for storage. I still need to put doors on it and paint it so it matches the house and blends in when I've got it shoved in the corner.

There's 65 lbs. of pork shoulders in there. Works great! 'Q was awesome.

damn rondog that looks great!
I got this big grill that I think will clean up nice. The left side is for charcoal, and the right is for propane. Currently the chambers are not connected. Think it'd be difficult to turn this into some sort of two-chamber side smoker?
