I, personally, love driving and wouldn't let a machine do it for me. But I can see some minor exception to this rule, when I am stuck in bumper to bumper traffic, or if I am impaired and cannot safely drive. I would be interested in knowing what is your take on this.

I love driving too much... this goes along the same lines as the whole getting rid of the internal combustion engine for good idea, I love the cars of this era (meaning 1960s-Today) and I want to be an old fart cruising around in my classic car from the 1980's or 90's or 00's in the future... DRIVEN BY ME! So yeah, as long as it's power-equivalent, has manual controls, and can be put in whatever car I want, I don't want any self driving, electric/nuclear/hydrogen engines... ever. Call me old fashioned I guess. [Driver]

^ I agree. Driving is a great experience. Just as long as I'm not on I-25. Man that highway scares me to death. I'm a vehicle perfectionist so I don't like the thought of something happening to one of my children. People drive like crazy and it scares me. Sadly they don't realize how bad of a driver they are until they get into a crash.

This can be a good thing-some people just shouldn't be driving anyway.

On the other hand the leagal issues could present a problem.Who do you sue if there is an accident?

I've got a bad feeling about this. Picture a future in which the automated car is considered safer and more reliable than a driver-operated car. Picture personal injury lawyers looking for a big payday if you dare to drive your own car and have an accident.

I'm all for an "autopilot" in a car such as in an airplane, just as long as there is a way to override the system in case of failure.

but on the same hand, with the amount of vehicles, either it has to be one hell of a smart system that in constantly monitoring other vehicles and what they are doing and making actions on that....or ALL cars need to be talking to each other and in autodrive, with the only exception being during a failure and manual control is required.

Pretty sure Toyota did some unadvertised, real world testing on automated vehicles with unknowing consumers a few years ago.

Also, if there is an accident, you still sue the owner, that doesn't change. If an elevator door closes on your arm, you aren't prevented from suing the building owner just because it was automated. The owner will always still be responsible for maintenance and upkeep.

Personally, I don't like my car to even lock the doors automatically. I ripped out the little speaker in the dash of the last few vehicles I owned because it bugged me when it would beep when my seat belt wasn't fastened, the key was left in the ignition, the lights were on, the door was open, etc. I just don't need a nanny reminding me to do what it thinks is right. Some might need to have their hand held - not me, TYVM.

This all reminds me of I Robot, that Will Smith film with the futuristic cars that have autopilot and you have to actually confirm you want to switch to manual mode. [Bang] The future looks grim...

the prius likes to accelerate and stick and not let you slow down. plenty of people felt the effect of that problem...some fatally.

did I mention that I hate the prius?

I do like the new sensors and stuff.
"Backing Blind" after a large Van/Truck Parks next to you, the sensors are nice.
