Whats the best way to get a custom built 1911's value assessed?

Pick a reasonable number. Multiply it by your year of birth. Add 20%.

TFOGGER already told him how Gunsmoke comes up with their pricing.[ROFL1]

I would start with the base. was it custom built on an already existing model or was it from the frame up?

There's only one way to assess an item's value, and that is to hold an auction. I'll give you $75, sight unseen.

If an unknown gunsmith, its worth nothing more than a used .45. If a known gunsmith with a reputation, then it might be worth a quarter of what was put into it, if you are lucky.

People who think they can get back what they invested in a "custom" 1911 are sadly mistaken. And those 1911's sit in the gun store cabinet for years.

I think my situation is a touch different, the gun was built for a friend around 10 years ago by a smith at Ray Stafford Supply/Mile High Shooting park. My friend fell on hard times and sold it to me and I have had it ever since. I think no matter what happens I will get out of it what I bought it for, however I just want to know if its worth $400 or if I am dreaming $1000.

Probably dreaming, unless you put it on Arms List, then ask $3000..........Then let the rubes haggle you down to $ 2300..............

What are the brands on the frame, slide, barrel etc that will help or you could swing by sometime and we can sort it out. I am in lakewood myself.

Alright, Essex Arms frame with a Mark IV colt slide is the only info I can give. All the pics below are small versions of the pictures that can be found HERE (http://imgur.com/a/FqBCI).

Sadly I took all the picture before it occurred to me that I should clean it first, so yes its fairly dirty.

With an Essex frame as a base, you are not going to like the answer.

Ditto on that.
Essex are cast builder frames.

That being said, if you wanna sell it....PM me [LOL]

The wife doesn't care for the Commander sized Springfield I bought for her, and keeps trying to latch onto my Norinco...

It's pretty easy. Assume it's a brand name 1911 like Springfield or kimber. Look for a model that has all the features yours does and see what they sell for used. You can probably add a little bit more if it's hand fit and everything.

Not with a cast frame... There is a reason the "name brands" are not sold for $400...hell, he might as well compare it to a "Gunsmoke" 1911 with similar features and price it at $4K. Never assume...ask.

I settled on $600 (with all mags etc). Might never get it and may seem unreasonable to some, but what it's worth to me.

as i said, with similar features. a cast frame 1911 isn't worth a whole lot. therefore, its not worth a whole lot.
