Lawmakers want airline pilots armed (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0612/77449.html)
"Congress refuses to gut the one program the Transportation Security Administration has offered to minimize: pilots who pack guns.
The House just passed an amendment in its Homeland Security appropriations bill that would boost funding for armed-pilot training by $10 million. That throws a sharp rebuke at both the TSA and the Obama administration, which proposed chopping financing in half."

What if the guns hijacked the plane? Cause guns are evil.
Why 10 million is needed is beyond me.
Firearms, ammo and training are expensive.

Yeah, but if pilots had guns, what would happen if they snapped and decided to shoot all the passengers?
Joking, of course.

same question about cops?
same question about someone in the .mil.
Pilots are professionals and no matter what the super scared passengers in the back think and how scared they are about the plane crashing...the pilots up front don't want to crash and die just as much if not more than the people in the back.

FFDOs buy their own guns and their own ammo..
As for training we've been over this before (lost in the great crash of '11). The only training an FFDO needs:
"The gun is in this little black box. Here is the key. Don't fuck with it until hadji is beating at the door".

Judging from some of your posts in the "Training" forum I'd guess you feel your personal training standards need to be a little higher than this.

You get the idea..
Even easier: FFDOs pay for their own training.
See I just saved the tax payer 10 million dollars. I just want my 1% finders fee.

What, if the pilots want a key to the box they need to pass a course that they pay for???
You are treating them like us..? We all paid out of pocket for the permission to carry concealed.
You know what will be next is that bus drivers will demand this paid training as well...

Exactly. If the guy driving the plane wants to kill everyone, he surely doesn't need a gun to get the job done. There is no viable reason not to arm someone who is already trusted with responsibility for the safety of everyone on the plane.
On top of it all how many of those pilots are former military? How many have already had training? lets start with those guys.
No one who is actually involved in that program will be admitting that on this public forum [Coffee]

I didn't even know that the program actually existed. That is awesome. I now want to be a pilot...
Seriously though, I don't think they should have to pay for their own training. I think if they want to protect themselves and the aircraft and have chosen to be in that line of defense then they should be trained for it rather than the cheapest training that they can find.
Gives something to stroke while they are on autopilot.

Hey now! Those were the best executed rolls to date!

What better person to arm? If they are already trusted with the safety of the plane why not get rid of federal air marshals and give the pilots the guns? Training money saved and an increased percentage of safer flights.
Not only that but pilots don't get paid to be an FFDO. A ton of money would be saved on salaries and retirements.

If nothing else, I think some consideration for training needs to be provided to anyone entrusted with a firearm on an aircraft due to the nature of the confined/restrictive area for the passengers as well as having a pressurized cabin.

You really don't have any idea what your talking about do you?
I'd be happy if all properly trained pilots were armed but I think the airlines should cover it. I'd rather them raise my ticket price a buck then have an agency dolling out more money via some bureaucracy and then mandating with some useless standard compliance guidelines.
The whole problem with our system is that security targets objects rather than people in the name of PC.

The only jobs that you have to pay for your own job related training are scams.

There are plenty of people who paid for their own POST certification while going to the community college. I'm just sayin'
