View Full Version : Take the fun out of building? And build questions.
So I'm thinking about building an AR upper, which would be my first time. I ran across this virtual AR builder at Brownells.

I won't be using that site for my build but thought it was cool. Anyway, so when you guys build a frankenAR, do you worry about compatibility between different parts? Seems like most things are compatible based on my reading. Is this mostly true? I've got a CMT lower and I'm gonna build an upper for hunting. Thinking of going .300 blackout.

For the most part AR parts and pieces are very compatible. There are a few things mainly when buying used but it is not like many guns that one would build from a kit/surplus/parts.
I think the three biggest things when matching AR parts depending on how far one wants to take it are. Pin sizes (when dealing with colt surplus parts)
Feed ramps between the barrel and receiver. Buffer and stock tube and the stock itself. The front sight block can be an issue but most buy at least a barrel with one installed.
In the end as long as one is building an A2+ from new parts there should be very little drama.[Beer]
Thanks for the advice Jerry.
Matching pins-- I've got a stag arms lower already. I think I'll just buy a stripped upper assembly from stag.
Feed ramps-- No clue on this. I'm looking at getting either a Stoner or Wilson barrel. I'll do some checking.
Stock-- Probably an adjustable magpul like the PRS.
Front gas block-- Both barrels are clean. I'll have to figure out the best block to get. I've read some people are using adjustable gas blocks for shooting 300 blk sub- and supersonic but others have commented on the barrel reviews that fixed blocks work fine for sub- and supersonic ammo. I'm pretty sure I want a rail on my gas block since this thing will be scoped.
thanks again [Beer]
