I am really tossed up about which to buy. I have a 16", flat top that I am wanting for general fun and possibly (if time permits) to start doing 3 gun. What are you using and what are the pro's and con's of each?
BTW, if I were to be shot in the a$$ with diamonds, it would be the new ACOG, but since I am a mortal man, I will go with the above choices.
i have to say eotech, i sold my aimpoint shortly after buying my eotech 552. i find i like the size of the reticle and the brightness settings especially with the sun in my eyes. i had a fear of snagging the aimpoint on my sling or jacket or something, it would be hard to snag the eotech.
How about an option for S&B Short Dot? I ditched my ACOGs for Trijicon Accupoints and a Short Dot.
Seriously, I like and have used both the Aimpoint and eotech/holosight. I would get the aimpoint and spend the $$$ you saved on a good mount and/or ammo.

Mmmmm new socks.
Another Aimpoint vote...
Although the EO-units are getting better all the time and most all the durability issues/maintaining zero issues have been solved
The batterie lasts forever now...you can leave it on all year
The controls are much simpler ..just one switch on the Aimpoint
No auto-off feature like the EO because The batterie lasts forever!
Put it in a Larue mount and you are good to go
I don't think you'll go wrong with either. EO-Tech came up with it's own magnifier and a corrected iteration of the 55x series so that the controls are on the side rather than rear - not easily manipulated if you have a magnifier on it - then again they are charging more than the same combo from AimPoint.
This really comes down to your preferences. I'm more of an EO fan than AimPoint, but it's a style of targeting kinda thing. I find it much easier on the eyes to use the EO with both eyes open than the AP, though the AP is easier still than the Short-Dots.. but that's me. There is still a lot to be said for the short-dot scopes, all the same functionality (pretty much) and still cheaper than the combo from either AimPoint or EO-Tech.
Another consideration I have in leaning towards the EO is being able to use CR-123's. It's what my lights use and it really bugs me to have to have more than 1 kind of battery running around in the pack or shelves.
Still, you can luck out and find some ACOG's for within $100 of what a new AimPoint or EO-Tech will run. If money is the issue, you can find both AP and EO optics for about the same price depending on what model you feel you need.
I love my Eotech. No having to decide whether to get a 4 or 2 moa Aimpoint. The halo with 1 moa dot is great at close or longer ranges. No extra mount to buy. Great for two eyes open shooting. It does sit a bit close to my BUIS but I can get to the buttons no problem. You can find the 512's near new all the time for under $300 on ar15.com. I will be at the next south shoot, you are welcome to run some rounds through mine before you fork out the cash for one [postal]

The new aimpoints last 50,000 hours.......
Put a new one in at xmas every year [poke]

yeah yeah yeah... I can't explain why I've latched on to the CR-123's as my battery of choice, but I've been buying items that use them and ditching anything else as I can. The only thing I'm running right now that needs something different are some sub-compact weapons lights that want CR2's.. dat's annoying.

why :?:
your good for over 5 years if you leave it on.
sure batteries don't cost that much, but why waste 80% of the battery ?
Try and find one of those batteries when you REALLY need it.
I wont have any problem finding batteries for my 552, i can buy 10 AA's for the price of one 1/3n. the eotech battery life is not really an issue, thats why most have BUIS.

i have both. aimpoint on my suppressed magnum research 10/22, and the eotec on my 10" AR. i'd say the eotec is faster and better with 2 eyes open. i keep debating putting something else on my 10/22 so i would say i like the eotec best.

I voted aimpoint I really like the EO but if I was in combat I would take an aimpoint hands down. It is much more rugged and can take a lot more abuse than an EO.
I do like the EO better in some ways but for a SHTF aimpoint no contest.
Just my .02

Exactly...I was just pointing out that if you were REALLY worried you could swap the battery once a year and never worry about it running down
I have a couple older Aimpoints (only 10,000 hours) and that is what I do
I bought a bunch of 1/3N batteries online for dirt cheap, but radio shack or batteries etc always has them
I keep a spare in my battlegrip...but only because I too am paranoid
