Hey guys,

I moved here from Ohio recently and I'd like to get my CCW and be able to purchase guns in this state so I've got a question.

My car is titled in my dad's name and insurance is cheaper in Ohio so I haven't changed it yet(cleared with the agent for at least two more months) but they both said if I get my Colorado DL the big wigs at the insurance company may kick me off my Ohio insurance plan and get it here in Colorado(not a big deal but if he's willing to let me save some money I'm not going to say no.)

Does anyone have experience with this and can you offer any advice on another way I can go about buying a gun in this state without a Colorado DL and is having the DL the only way to get my CCW since Ohio's isn't recognized here?

Thanks.

Sounds like you have a big boy decision to make soon.

You'll need in state residency to apply for a CO cwp. Also, by law you have something like 90 days to switch your stuff over once you move here.

You have to have a CO driver's license to prove residency. So be a big boy, pay your own bills, and you can buy a gun in Colorado.

Since I recently moved I'm still within the 90 days.

I came to ask if there was another way to do it within those 90 days, I didn't come here to be told to grow up.

Thank you Monky for answering my question.

Yes, if you are employed in CO then you can get your driver's license and the you are a resident of CO. That is the answer.

So a license is the only way to prove residency when it comes to guns. Thanks for the answer, I'm looking forward to being a part of this forum.

My thoughts exactly.
In the grand scheme of things, your not gonna see a HUGE difference $$wise
with your little money saving scenario. Just get a CO DL and get CO insurance
as the insurance requirements are a bit diffrent then Ohios and your not gonna
be able to do anything CCW wise until you have a CO DL.
I also wouldnt conduct a private sale or trade with you until you had a CO DL.

It used to be 30 days, but may have changed since I last read that or came across it.

Gabe said it best, most likely not a soul will sell you a firearm without being a CO resident. Welcome to the forum, we like to rib the FNGs here so don't take it personally... this place is like the justice system, anything you say or do (suppressing fire!) can and will be held against you in the court of CO AR-15! But like everyone said, don't try to buy a gun here unless you are a legal CO Resident, don't even bother thinking about going for your CCW until then, and every state differs on insurance requirements and minimum liability limits (CO is 25,000/50,000/15,000). Welcome to the greatest state in the nation! [Beer]

when I applied for my CCW, I had JUST moved here (IIRC it was like 14 days). I was told that he could not process without a Colorado ID. I went the next day and got my license (and the next day, and the day after that because the people that work at the license place in North Glenn are brain dead)

Drivers license in hand, I reapplied and has my CCW in 89 days.

Something else that may work for you, is that there is an exception with millitary id and "papers" showing Colorado residence

LOL.. the one from last night was this. old couple was being driven around the parking lot on a golf cart trying to find their car. they were going back and fourth and pointing in all different directions etc. they passed us like twice or three times, and finally my buddy looks over and is like, "you think they could use some suppresive fire?"

bahahaahahaa lol...

best thread of the year still.. and it doesnt even exist now!!! it will carry on in our memories though... lol

The ONLY way you can buy a gun in CO without a CODL w/ your current address is to have a DL from a state bordering CO.

Looks like you're shit out of luck unless you get the CODL.

True it won't be a big difference but for someone as cheap as I am it'll pay for the CCW and DL fees.

I wouldn't do a private sale in this state unless I was able to purchase a gun in the same manner(meaning I can prove I'm legally able to own a firearm in this state.)

Like I mentioned I was just curious if there was another way to do it but I appreciate the responses and this just gives me more time to research my next gun and all the state laws covering them.

I still do not understand why a CO DL is necessary. There are other ways to prove residency here besides a DL. What if the potential buyer does not drive or even have a vehicle? In a case like this, doesn't the State of CO still issue an ID card if requested? I believe a CO resident cannot get one of these State issued ID cards if they possess a current/valid CO DL. Right?

Monky

Correct, the state does issue ID cards, but you can not be in possession of a state issued ID and a CODL.

Upon getting a new ID you have to surrender your former state ID.

There are other forms of ID that are allowable to purchase a firearm, but they must MATCH one form of state issued ID.

Say your car registration has your current address and your DL does not (the little sticker they give you is not accepted by the ATF boys)

What is it with all the people around Denver with out of state license plates on their cars ? I wonder if CO. Has the " Rat on your neighbors" program like KS. had ? $ 25 for every neighbor you turned in for having out of state plates on their cars.......... I may have just figured out how to finance my mext firearms purchase........[ROFL1]

No.

Bordering states went away in 1986.

Only a Colorado resident can buy a gun in a private sale in Colorado.

A resident of any state can buy a LONG gun from a LICENSED DEALER in Colorado, providing their state's laws (and Colorado's) allow it.
