I've been married for 17 years and today it's finally done with. I got custody of the 3 kids, refused her child support obligations and agreed to split half the debt.. I did all of this with no attorney. I had little to no faith in the Jeffco Judicial system, but today everything went smooth. I guess there are still a few fair judges left, I hope like hell they stay there for a long period of time

Tips? I am proceeding alone as well. Although mine is digging her own grave. She is in court today on a resisting arrest charge.

Get the child support, if nothing else it will make a decent college fund.

agreed...

I have a friend that has two kids... and didnt want to "bother" with getting child support from her ex husband. she basically didnt want him in the picture at all. didnt want him to feel like he was helping her etc. (which is relatively nobel). but thats exactly what I was telling her. set every penny of that money aside for the kids then..

Not only that but even if a minimal obligation, like $50 a month can be used to keep them away. If the payment is missed the arrearage continues to grow, like forever until paid at 12% a year.

Then if anything comes up you can try to get more or keep them out of the picture.

Yeah that will look great when she is playing the victim card in front of a judge. [ROFL2]

With mine, I was very careful to have an attorney look everything over before filing all the paperwork. That saved me some trouble right there. Well worth the $250!

Wow, I had no idea...but good for you!!! I'd love to be single again. We're raising the wife's grandson, and both her daughter and the boy's dad are supposed to be paying us child support, but of course neither do. Haven't for well over 10 years. He's 15 now.

I, of course, can't do shit about it, because the support judgement is for the payments to be made to my wife, not the both of us. Somehow, my name mysteriously didn't make it onto the paperwork, and I wasn't invited to the hearing. For some reason, when we filed for support, they made me and the wife each file separate claims against the daughter and the ex-boyfriend, my wife's claims were processed, mine just disappeared.

So, I'm out of it AFA the courts are concerned, although I'm the main source of support for the boy. Grrrr. And my wife won't do anything about it because "she's too busy at work to make phone calls like that", and she also has that "we don't need your f*cking money" attitude. If his dad DID get called down for back support, it would be a damn fortune, which he has no chance in hell of paying.

I'll still be calling you this weekend about that ammo.

I get what's called kinship support. Basically the state pays me child support then in turn goes after mom and dad for reimbursement. May want to check that out.

I got my boy when he was 8 months old, no attorney! Douglas county Judge was a female and a good advocate for the boy and I!

Way to go!

Good job. I did the same thing, in Jeffco, a few years ago. Everyone there - at the Taj Mahal- was very helpful. No money to lawyers.

Hey, this is great to hear Josh (well, considering the circumstances). I've got an acquaintance that I think is about to get pulled through the ringer and I hope his deal turns out this well.
