View Full Version : American Guns/Gunsmoke legit Question on Builds

Like a bad smell you can help but keep smelling, I occasionally watch "American Guns" for the sheer kookiness of the show.

My inquiry to those that may watch it--after watching it (assuming you knew nothing of the history of Gunsmoke that is common knowledge here) would you want them to build you something?

It would seem to me if I was laying out high 4 figures to 5 figures for a gun, I'd want the gunsmiths/fabricators to be a well-oiled machine, not engaging in petty bickering and corner cutting. If the show is really nothing more than an informercial for the store it would seem that the 4th-grade level snarkery would be off-putting for a potential customer.

For instance, if I have a high-dollar watch repaired, I'd prefer the watch repair man not be screaming at the guy that may go get the parts.

Just an observation about our favorite show.

You know, Sons of Guns has had the same effect on me. At first, I thought Red Jacket was a cool outfit, but after airing their dirty laundry for two years I wouldn't buy from them. Of course, Wyatt and crew didn't need two seasons to convince me never to darken their doorstep - one episode was enough!

EVERYTHING on the show is CONTRIVED. I wouldn't have those nincompoop "gunsmiths" build me an outhouse.

I dont know much about them before the show, but for charging such high prices now does anyone else think their work shop sucks?

They have tinny work benches with guys basically standing on top of each other. they have horrible storage in a small corridor. they have a paint area that is right next to where they test fire the guns which is right next to their large machines (does the mist of the painting not go everywhere?? they use no hoods or anything!). I would think a place that makes as much money as they do would be able to afford a nice shop that isn't in their basement of the store. Maybe all their profits go to the alcohol collection that is in Rich's office!! And how loud would it be upstairs in the shop with all the test firing they do down there??

I dont know a whole lot about gun smithing but it seems like their guys really dont know that much and try things as they go along to see if it works and just hope for the best. And why do they put their logo on every single gun, that would make me so mad.

If i had to choose between the two shows Red jacket would get my business over Gunsmoke, they seem way more competent and think things through (for the most part)

Saw a bit of an episode, I was appalled to see them sell basically $1000 of gun with slight trigger/stock work and ask $10,000.... Add to that iirc they sold it to an out of towner in person who took it with him.... ie not shipped to ffl.

(And it was sold as a "gator gun" when the state he was from doesn't allow taking of gator by gun.)

The one last night they messed around with a thompson that some guy uses for some 1920's style action shooting. While messing with said guy they said that the customer wanted it period correct so they are going to have the barrel at 16.5 inches. 16.5!!! fucking idiots. It's 12 inches with a cutts compensator on.

It's to pay for all the tannerite they use to demo the guns. They're going to get someone hurt soon with thier nonsense. Perhaps I should have them custom build me a knife & see if the $4000 gets me a tannerite demo as well. (yes, I know a knife won't detonate it)

I think that many of the people who watch this show (I've seen snippets while in a hotel room) either are anti-guns or have no previous knowledge about guns. I believe the show portrays gun stores, gunsmiths, and gun owners as idiots and narcissistic, over indulged toy owners. People with no previous knowledge are turned off to the sport because they believe they can't afford to purchase a reasonable firearm because they cost so much, and why would anyone want to hang out with people like that any way?

I'll say this... I'd take Paige home if I ever picked her up in a bar, but the next morning she'd be gone- unless it was really really good, then I think I could brave Rich and his antics... but as far as if I had the cash would I take my gun to them? Hell no... I'd go to Bert before the word Gunsmoke even came into my head. On second thought, I'd probably take Berts advice on women as well! [Beer]

As they've got an FFL, they can sell the rifle to an out-of-stater. The handgun would legally have to be shipped to an FFL in the guy's home state.

Despite having no love for Mr. Martino, I refuse to go to Gunsmoke ever again after that snafu with the lady who they made pay for her gun before the background check then wanted to not give her a full refund when she didn't pass... I'm an advocate for being a good business and operating morally and ethically. I firmly believe that Wyatt and his gang are nothing but fools, tools, and pompous asshats.

That wasn't just a one time deal, that is standard operating practice for them. You buy a gun there you pay first then do the 4473.

I don't know know much about gunsmithing but it seems they're work is pretty bad. Using hacksaws to cut everything from barrels to stocks. The lead "smith" seems like he might have some idea but is kinda full of himself. The fat one is a cocky ass who hacks everything. The younger kid, not the son, is the only one that's fun to watch since he just makes fun of everyone. Do they seriously charge some of the prices they say or is it for TV. The "Gator" guns and the ones for the guy in NASCAR seemed to be just insanely overpriced.

Personally I'm pissed discovery airs them blowing stuff up and lighting everything on fire like that's what happens all the time. This state is ready to burn down from Forrest fires and these clowns make some pretty big fires. One last thing have they ever been to a shooting range. Seems they've shot everywhere but somewhere safe.

they went to ben lemond in one episode. i know it's a dumb-shit tv show, but their shooting expeditions crack me up--drive up, fire 5 shots--rich yanks the guns out of everyone's hands and then says "let's get out of here!"

their shooting is complete before i'd even have my stuff unpacked.

I don't really know why there is any serious discussion here about what happens on the show..... it is all contrived, scripted, planned and rehearsed just like any TV show. The arguments, the problems, screw-ups, the deals, the sales, how they dress, look and act. It's all part of the show. There's nothing real about it except the store itself.

As I've said a million times before...If and I mean IF I were to step inside that pathetic excuse for a gun store, it would only be because I happened to be in the neighborhood and had the urge to drop a steaming coil on the showroom floor. Otherwise...you will NEVER see or hear of me going in there. [Rant1]

Cstone touched on something important. Of all the reality shows, I like watching ones about a subject that I know next to nothing about, like Tanked. Then I can be introduced to whatever the subject of the show is, without any preconceived notions or knowledge. Then I watch a few episodes and am done. The only people I know who watch American Guns and the Red Jacket show are friends that have never even held a gun in their life.

Except for all of the COAR members who watch it!!

But most of us (dare I say ALL) know enough to realize that what these shows represents is a very small and absolutely not representative community within the greater firearms community.

To my mind, these shows, like most reality shows, are the modern day Freak Shows of the 19th century. The rest of us, who enjoy firearms as a hobby and as a birth right enshrined by our Constitution will be competing with the legacy of these shows and the distorted images they leave in the minds of viewers.

I often wonder if the promoters of these types of shows aren't just conducting a subtle propaganda campaign against something we all profess to hold dear. I could almost make the argument that Wyatt and his ilk are collaborators working for the Brady Campaign.

If this is a bit too tin foil hat for everyone, I apologize. I try to keep my paranoia in check. Perhaps my meds need adjusting [Flower]

Be safe.

Those are very nice revolvers. Not to be offensive, but you couldn't find a competent gunsmith within 100 miles to do justice on your revolver?

If you just wanted to get yourself on TV, there are plenty of Jennings .25 autos they couldn't make worse.

Good luck with your experience.
