View Full Version : Help Getting Started With 3-Gun
I'd like to try 3-Gun. There is alot of information in this section. To the point of where it's overwhelming.
The Colorado Multi-Gun site has alot of information but the site, IMO, is not very easy to navigate or laid-out very well. I did read a few of the sections in the "how-to" and there was another 1 page reference I saw that had some great basic rules and what to bring.
Is there a "one-stop" calendar with all the matches located somewhere for the Colorado area?
Are there any classes for the first-timer? Or does someone help first-timers at their first event? I've done IDPA before, I'd imagine its somewhat similar but with having to change-out firearms I want to be sure I know how to do it properly. Don't want to DQ for breaking the 180 rule.
Are there certain matches that are not as good for a first timer to show up at? Meaning, too much going on for someone to help someone new to the sport.
Are there certain 3-Gun "clubs" or regular events that are less "hardcore" and some that are very hardcore?
Thanks for any help!
Awesome! The first step is getting out there and most people fail there. I really love seeing new people get into this.
The next match I'm aware of is a 2 gun (rifle/pistol) at CRC on July 7th. The thread is http://www.ar-15.co/forums/showthread.php?t=51559.
My normal one is on the 4th Saturday of the month at Lake George. Sadly it was cancelled this month due to the fires. Their thread is http://www.ar-15.co/forums/showthread.php?t=21039.
There's also one in Weld county but it doesn't look like that thread has been revived since the great crash.
I think those threads contain all the info you'll need such as price, round counts, upcoming events, and location. It's also easy to see who to contact if you have any specific questions.
They're all good for a newcomer. These are club matches with nothing at stake so everyone's there to have fun. Just go with a good attitude and whatever gear you have. If you say it's your first match there will be people ready to help and you'll get more of it than you know what to do with.
IMO a great first match would be the lake george 3 gun. All of our berms a pretty short, so all the rifle shooting is pretty close quarters. The group of people that come are super nice, and will lend you anything you need or might have for gotten. The matches are the 4 saturday every month.
What you need for 3 gun.
Pistol w/3 mags
Holster
sturdy belt
double mag pouch
semi auto rifle(ar's mostly)
3 mags
single rifle mag pouch for your belt
shotgun, you will want one that holds 8rds
pump or semi. use what you got
a way to carry extra shells(side saddle, shell caddies on your belt, bandoleer)
bring 200rds of pistol and rifle. 100rds bird shot and 5 slugs.
Thats about twice as much ammo as you will ever need but its always better to take some home, than not have enough.
Each 3gun match has there own rules but the safety stuff is pretty universal.
The class at most are
limited= no optics, 9rd limit on shotgun and no mag feed or speed load shotguns
Tactical= 1 optic, on your rifle usually, same shotgun rules as limited
open= anything goes
some matches have he-man class= 45.acp pistol, 30cal rifle, pump 12ga.
hope that answers some of your questions
Thanks for the excellent info! I'm going to see if my calendar is clear for the 7th!
Pretty excited to give this a try. I need to pick up a few things, so the couple weeks works for me.

The East CO USPSA site has some scheduling stuff, and shows 3 multi-gun matches on the schedule. The link is here: http://www.ecouspsa.com/eco-new/schedule.htm#3gun
I hope that helps.
I plan on getting into 3-gun myself once I have 3 guns that will work for it :)

Even if you only have 2 of the 3, feel free to come out and shoot. Heck we had an Open pistol shooter shoot the SG match last month.

I went to that orientation event, but I forget where suppressors put you?

In USPSA, suppressors are legal in all classes. I think there will be a few shooting suppressed...[Beer]

Awesome! Got mine a couple weeks ago. I was concerned I'd have to run Open. :)

Interesting. Currently, I only have my XDm .45 and don't yet have a rifle or shotgun. I've been shooting USPSA which has been a lot of fun. Soon as I get a shotgun or rifle I'll show up.
The Lake George match is a great place to get started. Feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have !
