I know many will say the M1, but what else? What are your favorites? The ones you would never sell and hope to pass along to your children?

For me, it is my Ruger II that me pops gave me, believe he bought it in the 80s. Also would have to be my DD, and my Mosins.

Personally my Ruger 10/22 mainly because it was given to me by my grandfather. It will only leave my collection when I pass it on to either a child I may have one day or one of my brother's children if I never do become a father.

I have to say a m1 is a must and so is a 10/22, I think a 1911 just becasue of its history. I don't have any in my safe, but I am working on it.....

I agree, the Garand and the 1911 are must haves..... Need to keep saving up.

Don't really agree with the M1 thing. I am an avid collector and have owned one, didn't find it very useful. As a nostalgic piece maybe, but no use to me. Same goes for 1911's. Many will disagree. At one time I had 17, 1911's. They are cool and new collectors usually get one.

Most will own an AR-15 at some point as well.

Here is a short list for collectors: (no order)

Older Smith and Wesson 2 or 3 digit model semi-auto pistol (no composite)
Older Smith and Wesson revolver (80's-1994 models)
Colt Python and/or Diamondback (Detective Special or Police are popular as well)
Ruger Single Action Revolver
Ruger Single Six/Bearcat Convertible
Remington 700 BDL
M1903 (there is the nostalgia!) or SMLE
Original Weatherby Mark V Magnum Rifle (pre '72 German guns)
Older (earily 60's or older) Lever action rifle
Colt Single Action Revolver or close copy
Gallery 22 cal pump
Hawkin Muzzle Loader
Remington 870
Quality Over Under Shotgun
Browning Buckmark
Ruger MKI or MkII target pistol
one Glock
Baretta 92
AK47/74
Dragonov
HK-94 or MP5 clone
Sig.. at least one
Derringer.. just one
CETME/HK91 or clone
FN/FAL
Ruger 10/22 and/or Marlin Model 60
Ruger Mini-14/30
Remember no 1911?? Well Colt Delta Elite 10mm not 45ACP

At least here is a place to start. :)

1911...I built one about 11 years ago when my wife was pregnant and have never shot it. I built it with the sole purpose of being a family keepsake

Anything you can afford! Everyone should have the opportunity to own a gun.

My personal choice would be a 10/22 and a Ruger mk. 22 pistol of some variant

Imo theres collectors and hoarders.

Collectors must have at least one firearm in almost every usable caliber which have played a historical part in their development over the centuries.

Hoarders, on the other hand, just pick 3-4 sentimental/combat/common calibers and then buy as many related firearms as possible. It must be noted that these hoarders can also collect firearms within their hoard. E.G. different makes/models/manufactures.

However, there are also hoarding collectors who just buy anything and everything they can get their hands on or that is REALLY REALLY COOL. This is possibly a psychological condition needing treatment... it can be mitigated by more buying.

Final answer: Just buy an 870 and glock, the rest will follow.

It has recently been passed to me.

My point about the .22 is that there are many types of shooting and many types of shooters (not everyone would have a use for a Garand or a 1911) but pretty much EVERY shooter can gain something by practicing with a .22.

My M1a and Fal rifles. My 1911 pistols. Any rifle that I have harvested game with stays in my collection. My fathers duty pistols. Any weapon that has saved my life or discouraged grevious harm to me or others. Long list but pretty much everything I own is special to me.

You have to have everything you would like to shoot. When you get bored with it, sell it and buy something else [Beer]

Opinions are fine, but no one should let someone else tell them what they need to make them happy. Learning is half the fun. [Flower]

My first shotgun was a Mossberg 500 (12 Gauge)
My first bolt action rifle was a Remington ADL (.30-06)

They got me off to a good start...

Not many shotguns on the list, but hey ... This is an AR15 forum, right? :)

I'd nominate:

1. The Winchester Model 12 12-gauge my dad craved on Iwo, and

2. The Winchester Model 97, based on John Browning's 1893, that sold a million copies over 60 years (1897-1957).

Begins and ends with a 1911.

I didn't make it very far into this thread before I just had to say:
HELL YES! M1 (which I don't have... yet), an AR of some sort, a pump action shotgun (12GA), and no man, woman, or otherwise should consider themselves a gun enthusiast without either owning or a very strong desire to own a 1911!

what if I have tried shooting Glocks and just do not like them?

they make great ear protection...just ask the ATF guy in the picture that floats around. they also make great paperweights and have enough heft that they can be thrown. or the best thing to do is buy any glock in .40, give it to the enemy and the guns will actually blow up and take care of all your problems[ROFL1]

I think one of the great things about this country is that I'm not compelled to buy something just because somebody else thinks it's great (like a G19 [Puke])

Wait, aren't we waiting to hear something about that very subject from the SCOTUS this week?[Help]

Every American should have a rifle, shotgun and pistol of their choosing. (at a minimum)
Some may choose to only have American made firearms, others may prefer foreign born guns... and still others think they're scary, and don't want any of them in their house.

I'd still like to have a M1 Garand, but I can live without one.
My grandfather carried a M1 Carbine- but I'm willing to wait a VERY long time to get it, since that would require the passing of my father.
