Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, the state's most strident gun-rights group , lost its tax-exempt status last year after failing to file with the IRS for three straight years.
But the group, known for its hard-ball politics, as of Friday was still claiming to be a tax-exempt nonprofit on its web site, although the IRS revoked its status in May 2011.
In addition, the Colorado secretary of state this May suspended the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners' registration as a "charitable organization" for failure to file timely reports. Nonprofits that solicit funds must be registered with the secretary of state under Colorado law. Failure to do so is a misdemeanor, secretary of state spokeman Andrew Cole said.
Told by The Denver Post that the group was still asking for donations on the web site as late as Friday, Chris Cash, charities program manager for the secretary of state, said the office will investigate.
Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, led by director Dudley Brown, has a reputation for its tough tactics, particularly in GOP primaries.
Brown — a delegate to the Republican National Convention — said Friday that his organization experienced computer problems and lost nearly three years of data, which it must recreate.
"I plead mea culpa to not putting that high on my radar screen and refiling these," he said. "My guess is it's going to be a year before I can get it all figured out."
Attorneys familiar with IRS regulations said the gun group could be liable for thousands of dollars in back taxes on the contributions it received, but Brown said he doubts that will happen because they are working to resolve the problem.
Rocky Mountain Gun Owners collected an average of $84,500 a year in contributions in the most recent years when it did file, IRS records show.
On its secretary of state filing, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners says its mission is to "defend the right to keep and bear arms from all of its enemies, and advance those God-given rights by educating the people of Colorado."
"We tend to play rough with those who won't answer a written survey on a constitutional issue," Brown recently said on a Facebook site.
Brown's tactics over the years have angered his targets, including state Rep. Jim Kerr, R-Littleton, who lost his attempt last year to be appointed to a vacant state Senate seat. He said Brown distorted his gun record.
Kerr said it's no surprise that the group would fail to file tax records for three straight years.
"Dudley Brown lives in his own universe and thinks he can play by his own rules," Kerr said. "He's reprehensible. The guy's a butt."
Brown said he's never said the rules don't apply to him, but he added with a laugh that the "rules that Jim Kerr make up don't apply to me."

Ooops
Oh Dudley say its not so [ROFL1]
Maybe we can get a fundraiser going for them [ROFL1]
hopefully it was just a computer glitch. while the emails can be annoying I still support the organization and hope that it does a good job protecting our gun rights.

I agree... And Dudley isn't that bad of a guy. I sure hope they get this sorted out, I'd hate for them to have to fight this as well as for our rights. Talk about an oops!

Or tax evasion

Exactly.
Or tax evasion
or somebody out to get them...probably made some decent enemies!
bet every single one of us could have some IRS issues, even if you use a CPA. It all just depends on who is looking

Or tax evasion
Which is odd because they would have been filing paperwork to not pay taxes. Worst case of tax evasion ever.

no
IRS changed the rules
used to be if your revenue was under a certain amount you didn't have to file this form
but in the interest of f%cking everyone, errr I mean greater government efficiency they changed it to include like everyone.
LOTS of charities are getting caught up in this.
LOTS of charities are getting caught up in this.
Yhea, but how much do you want to bet that it'll 100 times harder for RMGO to "set things right" with the IRS versus, say, the "Preble's Meadow Jumping Mouse (http://www.fws.gov/mountain-prairie/species/mammals/preble/)Protectionist Society".

Not a chance. When you only pay $3000 interest on the home and the kids are gone there is not a lot a married couple can do. [Coffee]

Nonsense. All of the non profits I advise filed.
Failing to file for three years does not take enemy action, its suicide. Combine it with failing to keep up the Sec of State filings, and its really a f'up.
RMGO never impressed me and this confirms that they are a clown show.

I donated from time to time , never joined, because of one of it's officers, aguyI worked with at Brent Arms 30 years ago, deeply I liked him, and still do, but had a habit of rubbing me the wrong way, aswell as many others. politics are the manstay, but should it be a non profit? but tell me this, why is the NFL a non profit?, another reason for me not to like Major League, out fof dollars,Sports. Bythe way, afforementioned officer of RMGO is now a NRA rep

If anybody has been declaring donations on taxes it might change your return.

You CAN'T declare donations to a c-4 on your taxes, as c-4's are not tax deductible. C-4's are only tax exempt.
The article wasn't accurate, in half a dozen points, but I do plead guilty to not being an accountant. For the last 6 months we've had an accounting firm working through our books and filing the proper paperwork.
The reason a State Legislator got involved is because, well, we handed his head to him on a platter last November.
If someone on this list wants to side with St. Rep. Jim Kerr, a legislator who ran a bill to stop firearms sales one day a week (Sunday), go ahead -- you'll join the far left of the GOP.

Thank you for your side of the story Dudley and although the frequent e mails and solicitations from your organization get bothersome at times, it is appreciated what you do for the Colorado contingent.
Hope you get things squared away[Beer]

Thank you for your kind words. I'll admit, fundraising is not that much fun -- I'd rather spend all my time spending money to bash politicians. But, that isn't possible.
We're already squared away with the Sec of State, as of this morning.

i seem to remember asking for a little support with range cleanups (not money ) and getting insulted . then a month later he has the nerve to ask for money because they might end shooting in nat forests .........
Jeez you guys are equivilant to PETA members hosting a steak dinner fundraiser. RMGO at least is supporting gun rights especially on a local level. Just imagine if the Colorado house and senate start getting newly moved in CA gun grabbers. You can send the fear monger emails to spam you know...

Unfortunatly after the insults from Dudley, Id rather lose my firearm rights then

Do sh*t where you eat is what I always say[Bang]
I support RMGO and hope they get everything sorted out. Someones got to fight for the little people and their website has giving me much info these past couple years.[UZI]
