Not sure if it helps but:

Basic lookup, the 649-3 in .357mag was first introduced in 1996.
Only able to help because I was just searching for the same info on my Model 10-11 (which was also produced as early as 1997).

There should not be any difference among any S&W models with the same dash number.

I assume you're meaning that a 649-3 will be roughly the same age as another 649-3 and not a 10-3. Yes, I agree. It seems to me that all Hogue needs to know is the dash number.
That's what I thought, but they contacted me to make sure I had ordered the correct grips (kudos to them) with the statement that different years required different grips? Not at all a wheel-gun expert, only know which end is the pointy end (heck, I don't even know much about the different generations of my Glocks, except they all work reliably in all weather). I looked over the S&W forum and 'believe' it might be an Oct 2000 - Jun 2001 manufacture, based on first three digits of S/N.

Lucky, I was never able to find even remotely close to a year of manufacture of mine, and I'm too cheap to spend $50 with S&W for a "birth certificate" and history of it letter. Oh well, all I care about is that its newer than 1997 lol
