I talked to Bert about removing my current pinned on flash hider on my POF P415 and putting on an AAC blackout so it can accept a suppressor. Looking at them, I've heard good things about AAC and Gemtech for a 5.56mm rifle. I just wanted to know if anyone here has either and/or which is better bang (or muffled bang so to speak [Coffee]) for the buck. My brother is getting the AAC M4-2000 for his SBR and said that the reviews on it were top notch. But I figure why get a review from some dude I know nothing about when I can ask the community here who's word is a little more trustworthy and experienced than those found on the interwebs.
Thanks!

Take a look at www.thunderbeastarms.com (http://www.thunderbeastarms.com) out of Cheyenne. Lots of precision shooters are using them. I have a 223P-1 and a second one for sale, NIB. Check forums for comments about Thunderbeast cans

Zak Smith is a hell of a shooter and great supporter of shooting sports. I'd gladly give my business to thunderbeast for that.

I personally like gemtech better as a brand, but that is for pistols, my experience for rifle is limited. I will be putting in another F4 for a thunderbeast 338LM can to use on my 300WM, and a 338LM when I finally put one together.

I have the AAC 762SDN-6, and I am very pleased. Currently running it on an 5.56, but it will do .308...You may want to look at it.

That said it works well with the AAC .300 Blackout. The creator of the round. Sub-Sonic it's griningly quiet. I am going to get an AAC upper soon, just not sure when yet:)

AAC, Gemtech and Thunderbeast are all excellent. I personally own a T-beast 30p1 and a AAC Evo. I haven't ran the 30p1 yet, but I am very excited. It's just sittin in the safe teasing me. The Evo runs very well. If I had the option for one that comes apart I would have gone that route. I also have a Surefire mini in 556. I was also looking at the gemtech halo for ease of muzzle devices. For a SF muzzle device it's $100-150 a pop. Just my .02

I have an AAC Mini4 and I love it. In my opinion, it's the perfect 5.56 can for a carbine. It's 5.56 so it's never, ever going to be hearing safe (128db or whatever some of the huge cans get it down to is NOT hearing safe for the shooter) and it's always a supersonic round so it will always be loud.

The SureFire Mini and the AAC Mini4 are great because they take the "edge" off the sound, act as the best muzzle brake you can find, eliminates the side blast associated with brakes (if you've ever shot off/near a barrier, you'll understand) and are small and light. The AAC version adds about 2.8" to the barrel and doesn't upset the balance too badly. It's pretty good on a 12.5", but perfect with a 10.5". It's wonderful for these little SBRs because they're known for their bark and blast, and adding a 5-6" can really ruins the purpose IMHO.

That said, I would never ever buy a Gemtech. Any company that puts a shitty, low-temp rated spring into their can for their quick mount and calling it "full auto rated" is not worth giving business to. That thing will fail after a few magazines sustained fire semi-auto.

Got my ECO9 back from jailbreaking. So worth it.

Jailbreaking?

Jailbreaking?

Allows it to be user serviceable. They cut off the end cap, thread the tube, and machine a threaded endcap. I can unscrew the cap and push the baffle stack out for cleaning.

I have TB's Gem's and AAC. It's really what you decide on in the long run. They all have + & -. Unfortunately there is no one "perfect" can. Which gemtech? I have the halo and got it for ease of use on the many rifles i use. They all have A1 f/hiders and i can go from the SBR to the wife's AR , or that AR or one of the suppressed 22 mags i have, slip over and tighten. The AAC uses specific f/hiders @ $X per.

I've read that most cans don't need to be cleaned internally unless being used on 22lr? Is that not the case after all?
I went with the S.A.S 5.56 Ti from Mile High Shooting Acc. and was told that I'd never need to clean the can. So you got me wondering now..

I don't buy cans that can't be disassembled.

My reasoning is this: You have to clean a barrel which is relatively smooth. What do you think will happen to something that has nooks and crannies?

Maintainability weighs in heavily on my silencer decisions. If two cans are relatively close, the more easily maintained can gets the nod, even if it sacrifices a couple dB.

I'm no gunstore commando, I buy these for fun!

What I've heard is rifle cans don't need cleaning, because of heat and velocity, it blows out any gunk in there. Most people say pistol cans do not either, but there was a definite change in volume between my can empty vs. my can used. This was only really noticeable with .22LR

I wont buy any pistol or rimfire can that can't be disassembled.

Weigh your can when you get it - then weigh it again every 1000 rounds or so. Its quite surprising just how much stuff gets in there. The problem is exponentially worse with .22
