View Full Version : Game: Name the cartridge
Winner gets bragging rights. After one is guessed correctly, I'll post up another. Bonus points for grain, bullet type, velocity, etc.
If it takes too long to guess, I will post up some more pics that are easier to distinguish.
First up, this silly looking thing:

338-7mm Weatherby Mag
[Nope]
Going to save some space, and use my mysterious powers to edit and say no, so I don't fill the thread with "Nope". Will post a response on the "Correct" answer.
257 weatherby
Correct!
80gr Barnes TTSX chrono at 4103 fps. 6.1" drop at 400 yds.
Round 2 (I can't keep up this pace for ever, so they won't keep coming this quick) This even goofier looking mofo.

Better now? Sorry, typo. And default DNS on my net here goes to my business server array, where I am posting these pics. So if I have a typo, they look good to me, but bad for you all.

[Guessed already, and Nope]
Ok, one hint: it is a sharps round. It isn't belted so get those 375 Holland and Holland guesses out of here.
Ok, a stock image:
The two on the far right in order are a 45-70 and a 450 Marlin. This particular cartridge is one in from the left.

There have been one or more very close guesses.

.50-90!
[Nope]
sharps 45-110 500g ?
CORRECT!!! And the correct grain too!
Two 45-120 guesses. But no 45-110. The next one should be very difficult. So I can check up in the AM. Then we can go a bit easier after it. Have to have something to hold everyone off while I sleep.
This summabich should give you all some trouble:

Looks like my .22LR reloads with a half-supported chamber.
[Awesome. Did you type this with 8 fingers?]
45-75 Sharps
[Nope, but dang good guess. More exotic, and more foreign.]

.577/450 Martini Henry not sure of grain
Correct!
The first image, a 325gr. The second, next to the .22, a 400gr.
I think I need to take some more pics of some of my more exotic rounds, to foil some of your google-fu.

7.62x25
[So terribly close I *should* give it to you. Originally, this had deeper extraction groove and a smaller primer than the 7.62x25 or 7.62soviet. Today, they are nearly interchangeable]

can't use the antique ammo catalog? I didnt know we were playing scrabble ;)
Ok... Bed time soon, so you may not get responses until morning. This next cartridge has been a huge fascination of mine for years.
I want the full correct name of this cartridge, and a short description of what makes it so damn special.
Anything that isn't the full requirements listed above, will get a generic "Nope" like everything else.

Also, 500 views in 3 hours. Guess people are in to this little challenge. That's pretty exciting and cool.

SP-4 7.62x41 143 grain

Correct (ish) Not a complete description.
There was a special flammable propellant, of which little is known by the western world. It was designed to be silent without a suppressor. It was lethal to 25m range, and used by the Soviet KGB and Spetznas. It worked by having a plunger between the primer/propellant and the bullet. The plunger had a disc, between the propellant and the bullet. The propellant would push the plunger forward rapidly, projecting the bullet, but the plunger would stick in and seal the throat of the casing after the bullet exit.
Because of this, no smoke, power, noise exited the casing. It made the casings dangerous to handle, until they cooled and the gasses compressed, but they were virtually silent without a suppressor on the firearm.
Here is a link to the firearm that fired it, still little known about it:

Pick up with another round tomorrow. Bed time for me now.
