View Full Version : Who is the city of Aurora protecting and serving with this beast?

The officer inside got defensive when I asked him which citizen of Aurora he was protecting himself against after he mentioned the vehicle could take multiple shots from a 50 caliber round.

"There are a lot of people with 50 caliber firearms!" he said.

Well, the cops actually do have to deal with armed people shooting at them from fortified positions, and in those cases it would be very nice to arrive in something other than a Crown Vic or a tricked-out Huffy. Barricades, hostage/downed officer rescue, and sustained gunfire situations would all be examples of when that thing would be not only useful, but reasonable. The cops' general prerogative to "not die" trumps uppity cop-haters' prerogative to not be offended by heavy equipment in the hands of a public employee.

As for costs, equipment like this is usually a free or heavily discounted giveaway via federal surplus hand-me-downs. And the officer probably "got defensive" because he knew exactly what you really meant when you asked the question, and felt no need to bother someone who loathed him so much simply because of his occupation.

Eh, you shoulda looked real closely at the door and muttered something about how you have some .50 API rounds that would go through that, no sweat.....

Not bagging on the cops ( I have a number of friends on APD), but I defy ANYONE to cite a circumstance in the last 20 years in Aurora, where this vehicle would have been deployable in a timely fashion to make a difference in a law enforcement situation. This is an example of APD receiving a DHS grant and because of the restrictions in the grant, having to spend the money on "something cool/tactial/antiterrorist", rather than training for existing officers or putting more officers on the force. Since 9/11 there have been a lot of anti-terrorism grants from the Feds to local police. If your grant proposal sounds good you get money. Obviously, portable donut making machines for cop cars aren't cool but tanks and other hard core stuff is.

The reason the feds give all this paramilitary gear to local PD is to get around Posse Comitatus ... some day they'll federalize all these militarized local police agencies and turn them on the people. After yesterday I expect that day to be much sooner than later.

I ain't gonna go looking for the beast, but IMO such a comment would certainly be harmless. Anybody that would take it seriously has real issues.

But a .50 API would go nicely on my collection shelf! Wanna sell one?

Hell I'd give ya one. Not like I ever get to go shoot it.. stupid j o b.

It would be a harmless comment, but I'm sure the officers wouldn't take it as such. Unless you knew them. But random cop on the street would probably over-react.

nice waste of money. I have a hard time believing that door will stop a .50 API. I'm going to look for youtube videos to see if it is possible.

i bet money it wont.

i have put 50bmg ball rounds through over 3/4" steel plate. api and apit rounds are not going to stop without penetrating. flat walls in an armored vehicle arent the best. no deflection of the energy of the round.

.30-06 M2 AP from the 50's will penetrate 3/4" steel plate. Depending on the steel, of course. This is a RR tie plate, no idea how tough it is, but .30 AP will fuck it up right well.

They are getting prepared in case someone goes all Granby in an armored bulldozer in Aurora. My money would still be on the dozer.......[LOL]

Guess I need to upsize the caliber of at least one firearm.

I've always wanted to get one, and make it a camper. Those things can SCOOT even loaded up with money/armor/troops/gear, but I think it would probably need some suspension work to make a suitable off-roader....

Would be cool if I could fit my 2002 in the back, imagine rolling up to a track day in an armored car as a tow vehicle... haha

You're looking at this ALL wrong.

In case of a zombie apocalypse/shtf/eotwawki, if you survive, you JUST MIGHT happen upon this sweet vehicle and drive it through a few stores/houses in the Southlands Area.

Money well spent!
