I would like to get a dedicated 22lr upper. Any suggestions on what one to get. I don't want to break the bank on this purchase. It is for plinking around. I don't want an insert or conversion. Looking for something that is reliable with bulk 22 ammo. Rem, winchester, cci, blazer, etc.

What's break the bank? For 375 or less I would buy a used stand alone m&p15-22

Was hoping to keep it at or under $500. I have not looked around so I'm not wise to pricing. I don't want a stand alone. I want to use my lower with the trigger and stock I am so used to.

cmmg makes a good dedicated upper and it's priced better than spikes. You can get one for $380 or so. My Spikes st22 upper really wouldn't run 100% till I put a cmmg evolution bolt in it. Go figure. The bolt hold open system (actuator and mags) cmmg uses is nice too. All your controls work just like a real AR.

I have two CMMG (http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/category/22-Upper-Groups-252) setups, actually one is an old Ciener (http://www.22lrconversions.com/atch-pg.htm) unit that the CMMG is an exact copy of (in fact I've switched parts back and forth between the two units). In semi auto both run great. On the M16 lower, there are a few types of ammo that the CMMG doesn't like to run in full auto, but with the vast majority of ammo it runs like a top.

Get the stainless steel bolt for better reliability.

I didn't order mine with the forward assist or the bolt hold open adapter (BHOA) so I can't speak to those.
