View Full Version : Advice on belts?

My 2" Uncle Mike's belt and Serpa holster have too many moving parts when I shoot from the draw. I'm looking at buying one of those Velcro inner/outer belt combos (I'm sure there's a better way to describe that system) to lock everything down for competition.
Right now, I'll be using it for Steel Challenge, but I'm enjoying that so much, I'd like to try something else, too.
Any advice out there? What works for you? What didn't? What should I be thinking about that I ain't asking about?
Thanks in advance ...

I got one of his "V Ring gun belts" back when he was selling on ebay, liked it so much I bought a second. The only problem I've had is the black phosphate coated buckle rusted when I was working offshore (think lots of salt in the air and I didn't think to oil it) and it'll leave rust stains on white shirts when they are tucked in. Figure this would be solved by getting one of the silver buckles, or a coat or rustoleum (what I did).
I know he'll do the velco combo style (saw a cobra buckled one on another forum), just have to email.

I'm a big guy, and belts work hard on me.
Get belts made by a holster maker.
1.5", real thick, don't move at all.
and last forever
every holster maker makes them.
leather FTW
I've got one of these puppies and it works great

Lots of options if you are willing to wait a bit.

I second getting a well made leather belt from a holster maker. I've had a Desbiens Gunleather belt for 7 years that is holding up like a champ. I do want to give an instructors belt a shot for more casual dress though.

Ask Michael about making you a belt. Highest quality, custom made, and you won't be disappointed.

I don't think Clay is looking for a daily carry belt (if he is, he should just go to thebeltman.net (http://thebeltman.net) and be done with it).
I think he's looking for a competition belt.
Hard to go wrong with the Safariland 030 (http://www.safariland.com/DutyGear/product.aspx?pid=030) or better yet the 032 (http://www.safariland.com/DutyGear/product.aspx?pid=032)(which makes mounting lots of gear easier). Examples of the different setups with those belts can be seen here (http://www.safariland.com/DutyGear/competition/els.aspx).

Thanks for the video! Yes, I'm looking for a competition rig.
Gary Kimball recommended the Safariland, too. I'll look into it. Anything comparable out there?

Most of the guys that I know that shoot IPSC and 3-Gun are using the Safariland belts, they're available all over the place and with some judicious googling I think you can get a better price then what's on Safariland's site.
Other belts I see around are made by Double Alpha (http://www.ar-15.co/forums/www.doublealpha.biz/) and CR Speed (http://www.crspeed.co.za/). Both are available at CZCustom (http://czcustom.com/Competition-Shooting-Belts.aspx) (if you want to order from someone stateside, I believe DAA is in the UK and CR Speed is in South Africa)
I don't currently compete but I have several friends trying to convince me to give 3-gun a go ... I just know if I go out I'll become an addict and I'm limited on money and time as it is [Tooth]

+1 on the belt man, I have one of those quick ship belts too and has been fantastic
I work in a business/professional environment and since picking up a belt man belt I don't even use any of my "formal" belts anymore. Just saying a nice leather gun belt imho is the way to go
Their horse hide belts are stellar as well
edit: missed it, clay wants a competition belt
I use the CR Speed and couldn't be happier.
