View Full Version : Jeep Cherokee Guys: I have a Diagnostic Problem

The wife's '04 Grand 4.7L started running weird yesterday - weak power, engine light came on. I was driving by the way.

I got two codes:
First, the flashing "check engine light" code. It flashes 11 times, so that's supposed to mean a bad crank shaft position sensor or a bad cam shaft position sensor. I replaced both ($150!) and got no results. [Rant2]

I pulled the odometer code and it tells me "P 0700" which I have learned means "something's up with the transmission electronics". I also read in a few places that the "speed input/output sensors" are usually the culprit here with WJ Cherokees. Then I also read that you can test them with an Ohm meter. I did this and both sensors read 500 Ohms like they should, so I figure they're OK.

One guy mentioned that he had the same problems and he just replaced tranny oil and filters and he was good to go. I did this too - no joy.

Now the Heep won't budge an inch.

Anyone have the scan tool that can tell me what the "P 0700" really means before I throw more parts at this thing? Apparently, the code can mean many, many things and you need the scan tool to get the inside scoop. What a joke.

My buddy had the same code in his srt jeep, he said the 0700 code is a generic code for the transmission, the dealers reader could go more in depth. Came out to be a tranny solenoid out of whack. [Luck]

Thanks, but I was hoping someone could help me actually diagnose the code so I can tell exactly what the problem is with the "super secret diagnostic tool", since this code can be for a dozen of reasons. [Beer]

He needs the DRBIII chrysler tool for transmission. Sorry , I don't have one!

P0700 is nothing more then a genaric code for the engine control unit that says there are other codes going on in the transmission. That is it. You need a Chrysler capable scan tool to get the rest of the codes. Scan tool or nothing at this point.

Good luck. Hope someone has one they can drive over to you.

It's just mad at you for referring to a non-XJ as a "Cherokee." It'll stop misbehaving if you apologize to it.

Well the thread calls for help from "jeep cherokee guys"

I am very much a "jeep cherokee guy".

Then in the first post I find out it's a "grand cherokee" which is not a "cherokee". It's this kind of thing that causes auto parts store workers to ask me "is it a grand" when I ask for jeep cherokee parts. NO, if it were a grand, I would have said so. Apparently the OP wouldn't though... (I'm just poking fun here, you stumbled into a pet peeve of mine, but I have a sense of humor about it.)

I could have helped if it were a cherokee. being it's a dodge engine, dodge transmission, and a GRAND cherokee, I know bupkiss, but I wish you the best of luck. If it won't budge I'd start with shift linkage, NSS, transmission fuses, and transmission solenoids.

Good luck finding a solution, I hope it's cheap.

I have diagnosed your problem: it is a Grand Cherokee. They are notorious for all sorts of weird electrical issues, often related to the computer, and have very poor satisfaction ratings at Consumer Reports.
