View Full Version : 7 hours from leaving on a road trip...
... and both of our dogs just got skunked. [Bang] One in the face, one to the body.
We washed them, but it doesn't seem to get all the smell. Can't wait for the 13 hours in the car with them tomorrow.
I think I need to buy a few of those Christmas tree air fresheners and tie them around everyone's neck. Of course, as soon as the bath was over, both dogs wanted to run back outside and go chase the skunk some more.

Does tomato juice work for the smell.
Put 'em on the roof. It worked for Romney.

no the tomato juice doesn't work. The spray is a oil and you need to get the oil out. Baking soda water and dawn dish soap did a pretty good job when my dog got sprayed.

Our dog got sprayed once. We used a mixture of water, vinegar, and lemon juice I believe. Baking a cookie sheet covered in cinnamon helped get the smell out of the house. If you Google the water/vinegar/lemon juice I'm sure you can find the correct mixture.
Getting skunked sucks.

Ok Now that I got that out of the way I just wanted to say I feel for you! Living out here in the sticks of Franktown with two large dogs I know the feeling as my dogs love to chase small animals. The part that pisses me off is every time they they chase the damn porcupines and end up with a face full of quills. Then it's a $300+ trip to the doc because they wont let me get close enough to pull them without getting pricked myself!!!

Along with what bobby fairbanks said add peroxide or however you spell it..a lot of trappers use that combo for the furs...but I can't remember the ratios
baking soda and peroxide works the best you dust the dogs down with baking soda then wash em off with the peroxide
mythbusters approved :)

This works!!! Wife has used it many times, on out dogs. sometimes takes two baths depending on how bad they got it. But make sure you mix it in bucket, not a closed container, it will explode...... good luck with smell
This is taken from a recipe that we found on the web when we needed it:
1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
1 teaspoon liquid soap
(Dawn Dishwashing Detergent is often recommended, but any dish soap will work)
Rubber or latex gloves
Mix in an open container (bucket or bowl); it will be fizzy, a clue that you shouldn't try to mix it or store it in a bottle or other closed container.
Thoroughly wet your dog with warm water and then the solution while it is still bubbline. Knead it well into his coat, to chemically alter every bit of the thiols on his hair. Be careful to keep the formula out if the dog's eyes, nose and mouth; you can use a sponge to carefully wipe it onto his face. Let the solution stand for 10 minutes before rinsing. Follow the bath with a thorough rinse. Be sure to protect the eyes when rinsing the head. Chances are you will not get all of the smell off of the face and will have to live with that as it wears off. You can try Tricotine Liquid Douche Concentrate or any over-the-counter douche.
After bathing, check your dog's eyes. If they are red and watering, your dog may have taken a direct hit in the face. Skunk spray won't blind the dog, but it's very painful. Contact a vet.

Board your pets until your return, or the interior of your car will never be the same. No matter what you try, the only thing that will completely eliminate skunk is time, lots of time.

When our dogs got skunked ( both looked like they just came out of the lake) soaking, dripping wet. EVERYTHING was tried and they ended up getting all their hair shaved off. We did have shaded areas for them and all yet every tried and true remedy did not work. Once it's in their pores and they are saturated GFL.
