I've been trying different beers lately, thanks to my new home address which is near (very near) a couple of neat pubs and a very well-stocked liquor store. I've been drinking St. Pauli Girl for years, now trying some new stuff. Just discovered Leinenkugel Summer Shandy, and a new good one- Mikey have you tried this?- Longboard Island Lager by Kona Brewing Co.

Once you get past the pilsners and lagers that litter the American and German beer sections, head on over to the UK for some full bodied Ales. Bass is a good place to start (or better yet, Laughing Lab brewed right here in Colorado Springs). Eventually you'll be ready for Stout and then you'll never look back.

The key is to figure out what style of beer you like, then you can worry about brands.

Hell, get yourself to the nearest brew pub ... you live in one of the best areas of the country during what will be looked back upon as a golden age of small craft breweries. Find a brew pub, order a "sampler" (usually 4-6 4oz glasses) and start tasting.

Then once you've isolated the type of beer you like, then you can start shopping for a new favorite brand (and more importantly avoid wasting cash on some stinkers).

Start local, some of the best beers in the world are brewed right here in Colorado (half of them within a half hour drive of where you're sitting right now).

Now if we could just get James May and Oz Clarke to join you. [Beer]

Our local Shamrock Irish Porter. Failing that, a 1554 from New Belgium. Guinness Extra Stout is pretty good, too.

My favorite local lunch place is Toni & Joe's Pizzeria. They have 1554 and Stella Artois on tap (keeps me AND the wife happy).

If you are liking the Leinie's, try the Berry Weiss and the Honey Weiss. Better than the Summer Shandy IMO. The Shandy is to acidic for me.

Then get yourself a frosty mug, pour 50/50 berry/honey and have yourself a Jakes Special!! Great summertime sipper!

What? I used to live like 3 miles from the brewery.

I like a big variety of beer. As long as it isn't an IPA. While I have many favorites, here are a few of mine:

90 Shilling from Odell Brewing, Lucifer from somewhere in Belgium, Shiner Hefeweizen, and Laughing Lab from Bristol Brewing.

If it's really hot out I find Hoegaarden to be quite refreshing.

Locally, I like to go to the Pumphouse in Longmont and have one they call Shockwave. I think they used to call it a "Kilt Lifter".

Who says what beer should taste like? It's all brewed to all consumers liking. I don't care for Strawberry Vodka or Mike & Ike flavored but I know some people do. I don't want my Whiskey tasting like an Irish Mans butthole but and Irish Womans will do ok.

Victoria. It's from Mexico. Just recently hit the shelves here.
It is outstanding. It's like Pacifico, but a tad less heavy and goes down smoooooooth. Also it is very friendly to those who tend to feel like crap the next day. For some reason no matter how much of it I drink , I feel great the next mornin.

Schaeffer, fuck anything cold, Then went to 2 fingers Black tequila for many a yearl until the innards were passing more of me than what should be passed.
Now going on 10 yrs not a drop.

Not a frequent consumer but when I do it's Laughing Lab or Guinness.

Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest when it is in season. Discovered it on tap at a bar in Sheboygan many moons ago. Hands down the best Oktoberfest brew.

"The Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest Märzen is billed as the original Oktoberfest since it was brewmaster Joseph Pschorr who was commissioned by Ludwig I, the Crown Prince of Bavaria, to develop special brews to commemorate the occasion of Ludwig I’s wedding in Munich in 1810. The beer was so good that the party lasted for days and Oktoberfest beer was born. Today, Hacker-Pschorr is one of the six brewers allowed to serve its beer in Munich during Oktoberfest."

I am a beer aficionado myself. I grew up in NY and being Irish, we always hung out at the Irish Pubs. Guinness and Harp were the beers of choice for most of my life. Bass is damn good too.

After moving to CO in my early 20's (early 90's) the micro-brew exlosion was in full swing and I tried them all. I got into the New Belgium products, then this, then that, then the other thing. My brother and I even brewed a few good batches of ambers ourselves.

Then I got a kegerator. Best beer decision I ever made BTW. I was spending $150+ for a keg of premium beer (that lasts about a month).

Then I was at a BBQ and the host had a keg in his kegerator and it was a damn good beer. Not heavy or bloating, not watery and no-tasty like Bud and Coors. It was PBR. I was floored

I've had PBR in my kegerator every since for every day use. $85 a keg. Special occasions get special beer. [Beer]

Lots of guys will scoff at this, but remember...PBR won a Gold Medal in 1896 or something...LOL![LOL]

I like Miller 64 quite a bit. It's 64 calories, like a diet beer or something. It's also only 2.8% abv, so I don't get drunk, I like that about it. Just cool and refreshing and easy to drink. Pretty cheap, too.

Yeah, PBR is just "normal" abv which I like as well. I don't feel the need to get wasted after 3 or 4 beers anymore. <getting old I guess>

Breckenridge beer festival is in two weeks. On the 14th. Great time to try out most of the brewers in Colorado. $25 gets you an 8oz. Cup from 1 to 6pm. We have went the last couple of years, nice time to try a bunch of different beers, good music and food. I would recommend getting a room for the night, as most of those beers tend to kick you in the ass.

Hell yeah, cant beat that in the summer. I prefer 400 lb Monkey.

Winter time I would have to say Burning Czar Imperial Stout. I cant drink thick dark beers in the summer, they get all warm and syrupy.

I'm a big fan of IPA's and Pale Ales.
Recently a lot of breweries have come out with the hopped up filtered wheats. My favorite is Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale, or even better, Little Sumpin' Sumpin Wild.

I have been into craft beer for several years now. My palette has shifted through the years, started as a porter/stout fan (and still love them). Left Hand Milk Stout (and now Milk Stout Nitro) along with Ska Brewing Co. Steel Toe Stout and Maui Brew Co. Coconut Porter are all great choices. Those are a little on the heavy side for the hot weather we are currently having though.

Can't go wrong with Pale Ale or Wheat Ale in the summer time. Tend to be lighter, crisper and refreshing on a hot day. I reach for Firestone Walker Pale #31 or Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat Ale myself. Ska Brewing True Blonde Ale and Maui Brewing Bikini Blonde Ale are also good choices on a hot day.

When I first got into craft beer IPA's were a big no go for me. I now enjoy one from time to time if im in the mood for a bitter beer. Definetly cant go wrong with Avery IPA, Stone IPA or my latest favorite Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA. Ska Modus Hoperandi is also VERY popular right now.

Im also leaning towards Belgians and Saisons now too. Avery Karma (Belgian style Pale Ale) is awesome and Upslope Brewing Co. Belgian Pale Ale is quite tasty as well (careful with this guy though, it packs a 7.5% abv punch). Boulevard Brewing Tank 7 Ale is one of my favorites too and at 8% abv it only takes a couple to get ya going

Obviously I have my opinions on craft beer, for the Bud/Coors/Miller drinkers out there I say hey drink what you like but dont be afraid to branch out and try something new. We live in a great state for beer. There are tons of hard working local brewers in our state churning out some GREAT suds. Why not toss em a little business and try what they have to offer. Its not like the big guys are going anywhere, you can always go back if you dont like what you find in the craft scene.

OK that got long so thats it... [Beer] [Beer] [Beer]
