(to avoid hijacking a happy picture thread)

Fired the .50 for the first time the other day and it wasn't pleasant. I'm not saying it wasn't fun, it was.

You loved it anyway.

I invited a couple dudes with a 82A1 to my gun club back when they allowed such "dangerous" rifles and the sound was so awesome everyone at the club stopped what they were doing and came over to watch. What kind of 50 do you have? I thought the 82A1 was a pleasure to shoot...I want one.

Oh, I did. It was still fun. That whole " with the brake it'll kick like a 12 gauge" line is bunk. I've pulled both barrels on a sxs 12ga with heavy loads and that was easy. This thing was a bit like being sucker punched without the pain, but all of the dazing effect. I was just trying to get it on paper at 25. I set up a shrapnel catch to be able to fire it in my back yard, and to stay out of the dirt I fired it in prone from the back of my truck. I fired a shot, dialed in to toward a zero and fired again. When my adjustments didn't produce the results I expected I inspected the scope to find that I hadn't torqued the rings enough and the scope had moved forward a quarter inch. I stopped shooting, disassembled, reassembled, realigned and torqued/loctite-ed the rings. I won't get to fire it again for a few weeks to get a good zero.

It's the Safety Harbor magazine fed AR upper conversion. Functions well, feeds smoothly so far. It just packs a wallop.

What brake is everyone else using on their .50's? While it didn't really hurt, the wife made sure to point out the recoil pad shaped bruise complete with striped pattern on my shoulder later that evening. I might have to get Bert to change the brake on this thing for me.

How long is that barrel and what does the whole rig weigh? A magpul prs might be good as well since it looks like an ACE.

That's what you get for not buying a real .50.

I don't understand your post. It is indeed a real firearm, and really .50 BMG. it does not say "replica" on the side. :D

I think it runs around 17#,20# or so loaded, and yes it's an ACE stock. I don't have any problem with the stock.

You look much younger than I expected.

Goodburbon, here's the muzzle brake on my .50 BMG single shot "AMAC". This brake might weight almost as much as your entire lower.[Tooth]
This one does truly produce recoil comparable to a 12 gauge or I wouldn't be firing it.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/bobjan/AMACMuzzleBrake001.jpg

Give me the following info, and I'll figure out how much recoil you are taking every round.

Weight of the bullet
Velocity at muzzle
Weight of the gun

The more accurate the numbers, the more accurate the results.

The gun is #17 unloaded.
The rounds were Federal XM33
22" barrel

I don't have a chrono yet.

I have the same rifle and blaster bob is correct, the kick is comparable to a 12ga...but the rifle does weight quite a bit as well!!

So, a 660 gr round at a posted velocity of 2910 fps, and out of a 17 lb gun. OK, stand by. Gotta do some converting and calcimating.

OK, here's what I have:

The bullet is taking 0.00126 seconds to accelerate (avg) down the barrel and the rifle is traveling back at a 16.139 feet per second. This equates to about about 226 G's of acceleration into your shoulder. Oh ya, it's attempting to compress your shoulder about 1.8 feet without any friction. Taking into consideration friction (prone or bench on bags), you are probably still looking at approx 1.4 feet of compression. If we estimate a 20% decrease in recoil with the break, you have approx 1 foot of compression.

These are approximates, and if someone sees errors in the math, please let me know. I can re-run the numbers. The G's and compression numbers are pretty close though. Ya, with that light a gun for that caliber, you are going to want a very efficient break. I'm not surprised it left a bruise and marks.

Get something like this, and have BP re-thread your barrel for ya. [Beer]

My AMAC with Leopold MK 4 scope in 16X weighs just a bit over 35 pounds. That weight and this factory muzzle brake does cut the recoil way down. Flag pole is not really leaning, I was just holding the camera at a goofy angle. Second picture was taken at the NRA Whittington Center, Raton, NM.
