View Full Version : Home defense issue.
The house I have lived in for about 2 months now has a spiral stair case. My bedroom is downstairs and walking up it just now I realized it would be a bitch to swing the shottyaround and up. So I tried it. Mediocre at best. The stair case is pretty tight and surrounded by 3 walls and a ceiling most of the way up. I can not think of a good way to do it. Even with a hhandgun going up the stairs is pointed directly upwards until the very last moment

Just set some Claymore's in and around the house and have an "arm" "dis-arm" key pad in the master bedroom

Maybe mount a fireman's pole next to it ... if nothing else it'll be a lot of fun.

Sounds like a good defensible position at least. You have escape windows?
Good defensive spot but for offensive get a couple flash bang grenades and then just run up or down the stairs to get the bg.[Tooth]
agreed it is quite good for defense but my roomate is up stairs and bought and taught her how to use a shotty but i have a much better chance of getting what needs done if it ever comes to that

In all seriousness, if some baddies are in your house you don't go hunting for them, you hunker down in a defensible position and wait for the po-po.
At the bottom of that stair case with the shottie pointed up looks pretty doggone defensible to me. Maybe get her to make a bee-line for the stairs and come down there with you should things go pear shaped. Maybe make her remember a code word so that she's easier to identify in the dark.

Best case yes some one breaks in she makes it down staris and the police come arrest the bad guys etc.
It is The whole Seconds vs. Minutes thing odds are it will not go down like that.
How about this?

That sounds like a great idea until you find out that you can actively be on the phone with C.Springs PD 911, with people in your house. You are hunkered down and after the show is over you may find out that the officer was on a priority call but wait time to arrive was still 20-30 minutes.
That is the average wait time for the police to arrive unless shots are fired.
I'm not telling you to fire shots at the bad guys. But 20-30 minutes will seem like years with people in your home and you are bunker-ed in...not to mention the bad guys will be long gone along with all your stuff.
You just need to be aware of this before you make a decision to hole up.

I would think that the police wait time would not be very long if you advised the call taker that there is a burglary in progress/the suspect(s) have weapons/fear for your life/suspect(s) at gunpoint. Hopefully it never gets to any of that. Do what you need to do to protect yourself. I would say if you have to go on the offensive at all, and hopefully you don't but you be prepared to do so, a pistol would be best for that stair case.
Shotguns will be banned if it gets in again, so it won't matter. Surrender and plead for mercy are the only options. Thanks hippi, gen y morons.
Really, having something heavy you can roll down it would be best, it seems that could be blocked pretty easy.

Once 911 is on the line and you inform them people in house and you are armed, you will be surprised at their response time. Providing of course you have time to dial.
I suggest you use the s/gun as a secondary firearm and consider an AR Pistol.
The ATF allows use of the magpul AFG on pistols not turning them to an SBR.

Is anyone else completely confused by this post?
Is this from the main floor up, or from the main floor down? Which side of this staircase are intruders most likely to originate from?

A pistol, a seriously bright flashlight, and some properly placed mirrors. Accept the fact it's a great defensible position, but you are not getting down from there without placing yourself in the fatal funnel. So, defend and call 911.

Not everyone visits the same sites you do
Yea, scary, well, the correct answer is: How the F*** did I miss this???????? Ding..!
This was general info relevant to the gun community. Like, Drudge and all over.
When there is talk of banning shotguns, and it could apply to YOUR SHOTGUN, its big news. If this is slipping through the cracks, you gotta wonder what else is.[Slap]
And I don't read those particular sites.

Well the solution to this "study" is that we must invent a "sport" that utilizes the various parts of these types of weapons.
•Folding, telescoping or collapsible stocks
•Bayonet lugs
•Flash suppressors
•Magazines over five rounds, or a drum magazine
•Grenade-launcher mounts
•Integrated rail systems
•Light-enhancing devices
•Excessive weight
•Excessive bulk
•Forward pistol grip

^This!
As to the OP's predicament, I think you do need a way to identify yourselves to each other, because if you're both involved, you're going to be in each other's lines of fire if the staircase is involved.
I do like the short-barrel shotgun idea, and the AR Pistol.

I have known about this for a while and many others I am sure. I was replying "huh?" because maybe I missed something but I didn't see the relevance to the OP's issue. The post was just a little confusing at first except for the rolling something heavy down the stairs.

You are tactically screwed. This stair case poses alot of challenges. It's easier to shoot up a spiral than to shoot down. A shotty would not be the best choice in this situation. A .45 with a laser sight would be my choice for stopping power and easy target aquisition. And if it were my home, I would not have bottles on a ledge above stairs or in the path of travel at any times. Anything on the floor is a trip hazard in a confined space like a stairwell. And the bottles to the right in the pic would just become sharp objects that could potentially crack your skull while clearing the stairwell. Clean those items up and practice some scenarios and you should figure out where the optimal engagement location should be and how to clear the space. There's no easy way to clear a spiral staircase. Good luck.
I have the same question
Hmm. Don't know if i have showed pictures of her shooting. But ya I wouldnt chew my arm off.

Nice. I am a tactile guy though like to feel a well shaped female form as well as just look at it.
And Jim i do have an AR pistol in .300 black . 10 inch barrel did a test run and it handles much better going up the stairs. Still not ideal but much easier than a the 870.
Sliding gate at bottom. Go out the window in your bedroom, clear from upstairs.
Or take cover behind a tree while on phone with police.
Either way, just avoid the stairs.

Place a convex mirror at the top in a place that allows it to bee seen from the bottom, and gives you a view of what's up there.
If it was a bullet-proof mirror, you could shoot the reflected image of the bad guy and it would bouce off and hit him. Don't be a wuss, RoboCop can do it...

Don't go hunting. Don't clear the house. To hard to justify in court. Secure your loved ones, hunker down in a defensible position and call the cops.
I still say a flash bang is the best option.
What if it's REAL Ninjas that attack!?!?!?
You won't stand a chance against REAL Ninjas, so have another beer and watch some TV.
Don't go hunting. Don't clear the house. To hard to justify in court.
You wont have to "justify" shooting an intruder in any room in your home. You must be previously from a liberal state that doesn't have castle doctrine laws...
Put a switch upstairs and downstairs that will allow you to electrify the staircase. Then all that is required is a shop vac to clean up the ashes...[LOL]

..Seriously a difficult location.
I'd like to see the rest of the house lay out if possible, even a rough sketch in Paint.
If you're at the top of those stairs, I see it as a great position to defend, the noise from any type of shoe moving up those stairs will be a great early warning system for you if you already suspect someone of entering.
Is that staircase the only way to reach that level? and I understand that the total number of armed occupants in the dwelling is 2? yourself and a female?
I think it's already been stated, but I would find the most easily defensible room in the house, or at least on your level. Preferably one with a window access to a roof.
I think in home defense situations the MOST important thing is a plan, so I think you're doing the right thing by asking the question...but I'd like to see a lay out to assess what room will be your best bet.
Then its up to you to have a plan, Know where you and everyone in your house will be going and make sure they know it, know where the light switches and phones are.
Im a fan of larger bathrooms for defense...Get the kids/family/etc in a bath tub or something, get them to stay prone and then defend the room...It's small, unattractive to an intruder and provides good strong materials for them to take cover behind.
but yea...ideal situation...Military flash bang nade....then go get the mother fuckers lol
