View Full Version : Question for LEO
What causes a situation to need more than 1 LEO on scene? I have been pulled over before and had 2 cars on scene, I have seen what looks like traffic stops have 2+ cars at times.
I would assume training newer LEO, certain crimes obviously require backup.. what else?

They got your name from your tags, then ran your name, that's why they called in a second officer................[LOL]

It varies alot but as a general rule if you are stopped by one officer and another shows up after he takes you DL (we used to call it an adam car) you may have a warrant, and/or he thinks something is suspicious.

Proximity, department policy, Kismet...
Could be any number of reasons. Most calls blend together throughout a shift, but every call is different. It can be mind numbing at times and when available, an extra set of eyes can be very welcome.

Or it could be boredom as well. I would usually stop if one of my coworkers was on a traffic stop and when I was a supervisor, I would stop to check on my peeps. Occasionally, it would be to wait until they were finished with what they were doing and then go for coffee.

In highlands ranch, if it's a nice car, they only have one cop. If it's a teenager/construction truck/ or POS they have 3to 5 cop cars. I think it's a waste of money.

Are you thinking there should be fewer officers working on any given shift?
Once the shift starts, you have X cars in service. If emergency runs come in, and someone is backing up a routine traffic stop, the back up car clears and takes the emergency run. Either way, whether the officers stop one, two, or twenty cars, they are all getting paid to take calls as they come in unless they are assigned to some other duty besides traffic. It's not like officers rove around in three car packs from call to call.

Why? The deputies are getting paid whether they are on that stop, driving around or at Starbucks. Not a good use of their time, maybe an argument there. Depends upon the circumstances and driving by, you don't know that piece.

I'm saying I would assume two cops can handle most traffic accidents or infractions. The other cops should roll by and keep patrolling the streets and find the real bad guys out there.

nah not in awhile fortunately!

So what's your level of LE experience?
And I'm in HR a lot. I never...NEVER...see 5 SO cars on a stop. Or 3 for that matter. 5 cars would have to be more cars than they even have assigned to that area.

I had 3 cops stop me in Greenwood Village.. it started off as one.. then it became two cars.. next thing I know there are three of them and we're standing around shooting the shit about guns while they drool over the car I was driving.. The shit eating grin on my face was apparently suspicious :) [Coffee]

We have a policy that we never pass another officer on a traffic stop. We are to stop and check their status...if they are okay or there is no other factor we leave.
I know APD often runs only one officer per car, so they will call for backup if they have any available.

Let's not assume here. I actually have to chain up two cars behind me so that way whenever I stop a car I get to annoy the public by having three cars on the same stop.

We had some beat cars that could only be put in service with two officers. Because you always needed backup and no one else in the neighborhood had your back.
I try not to get overly concerned how many plumbers, carpenters or bricklayers are working together to get their job done but that never seems to equate to how many people worry about two officers parked in a lot passing information.

True that...but some of the hoods you have worked in would certainly need more than two officers. You should have had four man cars.

it can be something incredibly simple, cop runs a plate, dispatcher types in a wrong character, vehicle comes back as something other than what the officer is looking at...
Could be tons of things.

Can you imagine spending an entire shift in a car with three other officers? One of the best perks of getting stripes was never having to sit in the car all day with some pos who wants to talk about things in which you have no interest. [Help]

Oh I couldn't imagine be a required two man (or more) patrol unit...
Wait, it's not like the movies where you guys are best friends and you hang all the time together and get in awesome adventures?
I don't think in my history of driving any of my limited minor traffic infractions I have ever had two LEOs on scene. Only time i have had more than one LEO on scene was an accident and one time where I was rearended by a LEO (he couldn't do any thing so another had to come fill out the report)
Actually I got stopped once by two LEOs in the parking lot at my work, but it wasnt for anything other than asking who built/worked on my Jeep and turned into an hour of shooting the shit with them. [Beer]

Adam 12 is on Netflix and I watch it once in a while with my daughter. It seemed so much more reasonable when I was a kid in the early 70's. Now it is just funny. The salty veteran helping the young, fresh, clean, rookie learn the ropes.[Tooth]
I don't miss pushing a scout car. Dispatchers and supervisors just want you to get on scene, fix the problem that the judicial system and all of social services can't fix. Then you need to clear and move to the next call. 8 to 12 hours of running calls for people, some of whom haven't been within a mile of soap and water or know what a toothbush looks like. Some days you would just be happy to get a 10 minute PR in a filthy 7-11 bathroom. I remember once being told I had my lunch break and couldn't convince my supervisor that the 20 minutes I spent at the station washing body fluids out of the back of the car did not really qualify as lunch. So, how many police cars are needed to conduct a traffic stop? Less than the number of politicians it takes to make stupid laws [ROFL1]

I honestly do not know how you LEO's do it day in and day out. Id go nuts and
start shooting the retards on a daily basis. I can not stand people in general and
I know I couldn't deal with the exceptionally stupid people on a daily basis.
Appreciate all you Knuckleheads do even when you do occasionally give me a ticket
for speeding or some other minor traffic infraction.
CO Highway Patrol though, they have never given me a break. I got 2 tickets in the course
of an hour on eastbound I-70 through the mountains a few years back on my way home from
Utah after being gone ofr 50 days. I was excited to get home to say the least and the 1st one
had me dead to rights and the 2nd one I was just coasting as I came out of Eisenhower and was
applying breaks to get back down to the speed limit. He could have used
discretion with that one, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. So be careful when around CHP areas. [ROFL1]

as my family is heavily into law enforcement both on my side of the family and my wife's
my dad, my brother in-law, my cousin, my wife's cousin and her husband (killed in the line of duty),
I typically have a very high regard for the officers and all they have to do including traffic stops, but I do have to say that the morrison PD and the speed trap they have at the bottom of the canyon on 285 are taking it way too far,
that speed trap is all they do, all day, 24/7 it is ridiculous,
" Last year, Morrison police wrote 7,400 tickets,.....But bad PR can take a toll on a tourist town. A Google search of the words "Morrison speed trap" yielded 215,000 results." see article below
http://origin.9news.com/dontmiss/250721/630/Drivers-complain-of-speed-trap-in-Morrison
as a Bailey residents we go through there all the time, I don't speed so i am unlikely to get a ticket, but when you only have a few officers in your employ writing 7400 tickets a year they are not doing much else.

I see it all the time with Jeffco up here in Evergreen. When you have a precinct that has a single digit crime rate % and it's policy to send the rookies to the least "active" precinct you get boredom. There's a mathematical equation in there but I suck at math.
I see it as a 'fellow officer courtesy' like Kev said. Mix the boredom into it and if there is absolutely nothing going on (like 98% of the time in Evergreen- I know from experience with ride-alongs) they'll pull over and see if the other officer needs any assistance. I don't see it as a waste of money or manpower, if I had a job like that and the absolute worst happens I'd definitely want backup right there. Also I think just about every single agency requires a second unit on scene for any searches to backup the officer conducting the vehicle search. [Beer]

I was once pulled over and 4 cars showed up, but I was just off campus, and a Cap was pulling me over in his unmarked. It was 3am and I was in a hurry to get some nookie. I looked around, saw one pair of headlights about .5 mile away and made a left on red. It turned out to be an unmarked car. I never got that nookie.

When I first started in law enforcement 20 some years ago, I heard that a lot of retired LAPD officers would move to Montana and buy property when they retired. I didn't understand the connection until later in my career, when you tire of constantly dealing with idiot people, tire of dealing with attorneys, tire of all the B.S. Then I understood: they wanted a place where they didn't have to see or deal with people on a regular basis anymore. NOW, I GET IT. Anyone got 1,000 acres in the middle of nowhere they want to sell cheap?

you could be a cop out here where we live. other than my now retired next door neighbor, I havent seen a cop out here in probably 5 years.
actually the last time was when member CStone came out and then the year before when member DMeis of the CSP came out.
Our area is too poor to afford cops.
Actually, I think we are short on dirtbags, so maybe none are generally needed.
I like where you live. Your kids looked like they really like where they live.

Englewood responded with 5 cars and officers for 4 adults walking home from a friends house through the alley. What a joke the Englewood PD are. They are all about citizen intimidation, I got the Sgt in charges' business card and we filed a complaint. My biggest (and really only) issue with living in this "city".

My agency only has pre-hire physical requirements currently. They are currently developing some requirements similar to the Cooper test as an annual physical fitness assessment.
What are your physical requirements and how often do you have to do them? Do you have a weight per height requirement?
This is a pretty standard federal physical fitness test: http://www.fletc.gov/training/programs/physical-techniques-division/requirement-documents/physical-efficiency-battery-peb.html/
Every agency runs their programs differently, however once you are on the job, testing is not like it is in the military. Participation is valued over meeting any particular standard. One, one, one and walk was a very common joke.
Where I work now, everyone is old, like me. Doing CPR on a mannequin for one minute would be considered a strenuous work out and much more likely to be needed for one of your co-workers. [Flower]
If you have ever passed a PT test in the military, you will not have any problems with most police PT tests.
Most departments list their pre-employment standards on their web site.
