Muzzleloader Reccomendations

Looking to get muzzleloader for the fact that I want to get after elk earlier than rifle season allows for. Anyone have any reccomendations for a rifle/caliber/etc that would fit the bill? I realize thats a completely open question so Ill preface it by saying Im a complete novice at muzzleloaders/blackpowder rifles but fairly experienced at modern cartridge firearms. greenlight..................go

You have to have a minimum of .50 cal for elk, and I would suggest either a .50 or .54 caliber. You can go with a Cabelas Hawken or something like that, but I would suggest a Lyman Great Plains Rifle. I have seen them run from around $400 to $550 for new. The used ones are not much cheaper normally. Thompson Center makes a good rifle as well, I shot a Renegade for about 12 years before getting my Lyman. The Renegades you can pick up for about half the price of the Lymans. If you want an in-line, I have no idea. I have never shot one before, and don't know if I ever will.

I have a remington genesis .50 in camo with thumbhole stock. Has 3 bulls to its name! that is all that needs to be said!

I have been hunting elk for a few years now using black powder. I prefer inline muzzleloaders because they are easy to use and very similar to using a centerfire. I have shot flintlock before and was not a fan of the delay after pulling the trigger.
If you are interested in an inline muzzleloader I swear by Thompson Center .50 cal. I have shot the standard blue barrel with black stock up to their Bone Collector edition and they all shoot awesome right out of the box. If you want to go shooting let me know and we will take it out. I can show you all the accessories and powder I prefer.
If you look on Thompson's website they should have a video that show a couple of hunts as well as proper use and care of a muzzleloader. When I bought mine it came with a DVD of the video.
