I apologize for your inconvenience and I do not know how it happened as I am very careful with my emails and web browsing. I have taken steps to avoid this issue in the future.

it is quite possible that YOU were not hacked (though that is possible as well), but rather the email provider (really? AOL?, really? just kidding) was hacked, and a password file was taken (so they have thousands of spam accounts to send from, economy of scale works in crime too).
