View Full Version : HK G3 What do you know?
Has anyone built one with a parts kit and one of those receiver flats on the market? Back in the late 90's I built a FA 91 from a G3 kit and a receiver from federal arms. Still shoot it and works great but there was a down side, the aluminum receiver does not support the cocking tube so you loose the free floated barrel (wtf). I keep seeing the receiver flats for sale and wonder if it would be an easy swap. So what do you guys think? [UZI]

Not easy at all. The alignment of the trunnion, triple frame, barrel and cocking tube is very, very critical. Your off by a couple thousandths and your hosed.
Bending the flats accuratly is another matter entirely.
Sell the Alumabomb and take the proceeds and buy a PTR.
Then worry you not.....
I tried and tried for awhile to build one up but could never get it right. I was going to go see a guy in Texas who built a crazy jig that was supposed to perfectly align everything but he turned out to be a flake.
In the end I sold most of the parts and bought a real HK 91 -- since then I have never looked back.
A couple of years ago I inherited a PTR. I have shot the real HK91 next to the PTR on many occasions. There is, no comparison - the HK kicks the PTRs arse in every way (except price). Not saying I wouldn't shoot the PTR (I do and I really like it); just saying if your going to do it - go all the way. ;)
If you really want to do this... Here ya go, buy this: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=296131451

You are going to need to take some measurements of your gun, mainly the trunion fit (where it sits exactly in your current receiver), so you can match it when you transfer it into your new receiver. That is going to be the most difficult part of the entire thing. If you can get that part done, the rest should be a cake walk. The next hard thing is to weld the cocking tube to the receiver, and take care of the front sight. [Beer]

Don't buy that cocking tube. It was demilled wrong. There at the end theres supposed to be a stub that inserts into the receiver. Look at http://www.hkparts.net/shop/pc/HK-G3-91-Cocking-Tube-New-HK-German-125p1041.htm to see what I mean. It's a pretty common sight. People don't realize there's an inch or two that extends into the receiver and just lop em off, when you are supposed to cut/grind real careful around all the spot welds and peel the receiver parts off.
^He's correct on that, my bad, I did a fast search and posted without paying attention... [Stooge]
I've become very reluctant to try and fold a flat. The cost difference isn't that more for a formed receiver. Also I would need another cocking tube and trunnion (because when I built the FA 91 I drove two pins through it). Not too much money for the swap.
Thanks for the advice everyone.

Never built a g3 but got tempted a few times. Need to measure a lot before welding. Should be able to find a decent accurate how to out there. If only I had a welder....
