View Full Version : First! JCSO first LE agency in CO with hot new rides!

So a little background, despite some of my criticisms of their methods (mostly just the rookies up in Evergreen), my family has been good friends with Sheriff Ted Mink for a very long time. Well I think he's done a pretty decent job since he took over from Stone way back when... and this next case is no different. For those that live in the jurisdiction, you may or may not have seen the new Ford Interceptors cruising around. Well, in the words of the little girl from Close Encounters "They're here!"
http://media.treehugger.com/assets/images/2011/10/ford-police-interceptor-photo01.jpg
This is a stock photo of the car, granted JCSO has their paint job on them, but same car. It was just reported in this week's Canyon Courier (the Evergreen weekly newspaper), Jeffco bought 20 of them and will be phasing out their Crown Vics to be replaced with these slightly more expensive, but more economic, safe, and enhanced cars as they retire the old fleet.

Gear-heads, keep reading, this is where the cool part comes in...

Jeffco is the first law enforcement agency in Colorado to introduce the 2013 Ford Interceptor into its fleet. This is the fastest police car on the market today. It's faster than the new Dodge Charger, it's faster than the Chevrolet Caprice. But the most important thing is that this is an all-wheel drive vehicle.
It's equipped with a 3.5L twin turbo V6 that produces 365BHP and gets 2MPG better than the crown vic. It's also equipped with a rear-view safety reverse camera, reverse-sensing radar, blind spot detection, active suspension control, computerized throttle, and is the only car that tested and passed the 75MPH rear end crash test.

All in all, I say a good new purchase to make our LEOs safer, and better equipped. Expect the rest of the Metro Area LE Agencies to start jumping on this trend by end of next year. [Beer]

last time I saw a cop car based on a Taurus was in Robocop...[Coffee]

I'm curious how these will stack up with the other options on the market-

Interesting that they've gone AWD- because they don't have any RWD besides the Mustang anymore... they didn't offer AWD because they thought it was needed, but as a compromise because they don't offer RWD.

They say it's faster- how is that even measured? and is that really what they need? (charger is 146+mph, are they even allowed to pursue at those speeds?) how's the handling, brakes? reliability? maintenance? price? (cost of ownership)

Looked at Ford's website for these, they're doing a lot of marketing-speak on there... it's a pretty unproven platform- this is a good way to prove it, tho! And if you can get ahold of the the interceptor parts and they interchange on the civvy Taurus, could result in braking and suspension improvements (did on the Charger, anyway)

Actually, these are only $4,000 more than what it costs for the Crown Vic, but looking at the figures they're 3x the car with a little better fuel economy. Plus they're not just outright replacing the whole fleet, these are going in when they retire those on the fleet that are due to be taken out of service.

Ok, starting to get fed up, what the fuck is your problem? Are you just that bored, lonely, or douchey that you have to interject with these slanderous comments that either try to cut me down, insult me, or just get a rise? Seriously, go have an accident with a power tool if you really can't contribute in a more constructive way. I'm really thinking about adding you to the ignore list, it seems like most of your comments aren't really driving conversations forward.

The engine is pretty well proven. It's the Ford EcoBoost motor, which has been doing great in F150s, in the new Taurus. I'm not sure where the AWD drivetrain came from, though.

AWD is actually better for control, handing, and high speed maneuvering (just ask why Team Audi uses the Quattro platform for the majority of their race team, or why RUF changes the 911 platform from RWD to AWD). Reading the specs on the Ford it does far better in braking, acceleration (big deal for LEOs), and handling... reliability, too soon to tell I'm sure, and price, like I said is only $4,000 more than the Crown Vic. I'm sure maintenance is comparable, despite Jeffco seeming to have a ridiculous budget ($16,000 for vehicle mounted FLIR domes?).

Slanderous? Are you going to start a civil suit or something? [ROFL1]

You are just a whiny, attention-whoring, diarrhea-of-the-mouth (or fingers as it were) type of individual. The fact that you get really upset about it but yet don't correct it, is what makes it amusing.

Slanderous- to insult, demean, degrade...etc. Not just legal speak.

How is this any of the insults you just said? I figure since we have LEOs in our community, and an interest in LE activity here I would share what one of our agencies is up to that I thought was kinda neat. What is there to correct? Oh wait, that's right, why am I even wasting my time with you, IGNORE.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Ask why Team Audi using Quattro? BECAUSE THEY'RE AUDI. That's like asking why a bird flies.

To generalize, RUF actually changes most AWD 911 platforms to RWD. But realistically they're probably building off of RWD platforms like the 911 GT3.

That being said, AWD is great for traction in high horsepower vehicles. That's the best you can say about AWD vs. RWD in generalities. On the whole, RWD vehicles handle better. However they are less forgiving to the driver, and does not provide as much traction. AWD cars tend to plow in high speed turns.

But go ahead, maybe if you talk a LOT about a subject you know absolutely nothing about, people will think you do.

Sharp? Are you talking about oversteer or understeer? I don't think I've ever heard of understeering called sharp.

Subarus are pretty well known to understeer (plow) from the factory. Which, in my opinion, is frightening. The only option is to brake, and hopefully you don't offset the weight too much to start oversteering.

Sharp corner, is what I meant... I was going about 45 around a a 90* turn. The car didn't want to turn. So yes, it's plowed. Little tap on the breaks fixed it though.

+1 this.

Do you all realize that part of the infraction system does have an infraction for insulting other members. These infractions work towards restricting your access to the site.

Any one of us ay not like reading what another member has to say but it's never justification to insult that member.

Keep it civil or enjoy some time away from the site - either by your choice or the site staff's choice.

This is your warning, next will be action!

Now, as to the OP, thanks for posting this as I found the subject interesting.

Funny that some departments going chebby. The car is Austrailian and it only supposed to be around for two model years. The Caprice is sweet but it is only for the man. Sorta like Colt did for a bit. Seem like you'd want you fleet more standard than less. It still kills me budget the police have for cars. They could use econo cars like Europe does. Funny too that with the Caprice the V6 and V8 are the same price. If I was given one of these as a company car I would need tires one a month.

I wasn't making the point that RWD handles better,(that is another whole argument) just that departments were NOT asking for it... AWD is more complicated for sure. I doubt maintenance will be the same on a twin turbo awd...

Where are the specs? That was my snarky comment on Ford's website-all marketing fluff... there are some features, but no hard performance data

I'd love to see a unbiased shoot-out with all the police packages in a set of races, at least some with real officers behind the wheel for subjective "feel"
Please stop comparing it to the crown-vic... that was an outdated, pig of a design(and no longer available, so a moot point)- the Charger trounced it, and that's probably why Ford got off their ass and came up with a new interceptor- they got lazy until somebody made something that competed in the fleet market.

the SHO doesn't get all rave reviews: http://www.wired.com/reviews/2012/06/taurus-sho/
everyone I know that has the F150 with Eco-Boost is wondering where the mpg rating comes from- they all fall VERY short of the rating I wonder if Ford tuned the computer to look for the EPA test.

True, but anyone who pays attention to cars (not sold in the US) the Holden HSV was a pretty sweet car, I love the aggressive styling and the performance, I wish they sold them here! Although I've read they have a pretty loose handling issue and are more prone to oversteer.

I think the main factor for AWD is- and ask any Subie owner this- is we have a rare and unique thing here in Colorado... Winter! [Coffee] Obviously AWD handles better than RWD and I believe (mainly because I've lived in Jeffco almost my entire life) they realize that JCR&B isn't the best at plowing snow (mostly my opinion though) and you don't want your LEOs bogged down because of a storm. And you're right, the Crown Vic is outdated, was one of the better interceptors in it's hayday but now it's really showing it's age. I think CSP made a wise choice using the upgraded Chargers though, hate on them all you want for being a 4-door, they do make pretty good LE cars with the police package- at least that's what a family friend of ours on CSP said, he likes them. [Beer] I'm probably one of the only people on earth who actually likes the new Charger, granted it's not true to the original, but now a days almost every single re-release of older cars isn't true to the original -see Chevy Malibu :O
