View Full Version : Other guy's movers messing with my bike

So these movers decided it would be ok to not only block my vehicle with their moving truck, but also physically moved my motorcycle out of the way so they could have more room.
I am pretty pissed off because they thought it'd be ok to not just put their hands on my motorcycle, but actually move it.
I confronted them, they basically didn't give a shit and the guy moving in basically took responsibility and tried calming things down which is fine but the movers are basically getting away with this kind of behavior.
I'd like to file a complaint to the company (North American van line), not because of any damages but simple principle. Am I over reacting? Should I just let it go? Or should I file the complaint?

Personally, I'd be pissed too, because it's the principle of the issue.
That said, there really isn't much benefit in filing a complaint over something like this. They definitely should have asked, but give them the benefit of the doubt; maybe they were trying to do the best job possible for their customer, and thought that moving the bike was the best course of action at the time.
No damage was done, so I'd just let it slide. Not worth getting worked up over, really.

Or should I file the complaint?I would file a complaint about them blocking the driveway. What if you had to leave unexpectedly for an emergency?
I'd definitely be pissed. I would file a complaint for sure. You can't just move someones property without asking. They should have talked to you first...a knock on the door, something...
File the complaint, what would have happened if they dumped it, You think they would own up to it? Touching one mans bike is right up there with grabbing his girlfriend IMHO.

This...
Hell I know guys that would let you touch thier girl long before you could touch thier bike....
I'd file the complaint ... They should be happy there was no ass beating administered
That'd piss me off! I'd definitely file a complaint, they don't get in someones car if it's unlocked and pop the clutch to roll it out of the way do they? If they won't move call the po po and let them know your driveway is being blocked. Everything could of been avoided by a simple knock on the door asking you to possibly move your bike.

I'd be looking at a alarm system. Alarm goes off, call the 911. When the authorities arrive, make them think the movers were stealing the bike! Give them that trespass upon you some grief too...

You are way off base. I would be less pissed if someone touched my girlfriend.

I would have notified law enforcement:
42-5-103. Tampering with a motor vehicle
(1) Any person who with criminal intent does any of the following to a motor vehicle or to any part, equipment, attachment, accessory, or appurtenance contained in or forming a part thereof without the knowledge and consent of the owner of such motor vehicle commits tampering with a motor vehicle:
(a) Tightens or loosens any bolt, bracket, wire, screw, or other fastening contained in, contained on, or forming a part of such motor vehicle; or
(b) Shifts or changes the gears or brakes of such motor vehicle; or
(c) Scratches, mars, marks, or otherwise damages such motor vehicle or any part thereof; or
(d) Adds any substance or liquid to the gas tank, carburetor, oil, radiator, or any other part of such motor vehicle; or
(e) Aids, abets, or assists in the commission or attempted commission of any such unlawful act or acts enumerated in this subsection (1).
(2) Tampering with a motor vehicle is:
(a) A class 1 misdemeanor if the damage is less than one thousand dollars;
(b) A class 5 felony if the damage is one thousand dollars or more but less than twenty thousand dollars;
(c) A class 3 felony if the damage is twenty thousand dollars or more or causes bodily injury to a person.
It might not stick, that would depend on where the bike was located, was it in gear etc... but for damn sure notify the company and advise them of what took place was well as this law ^. The only reason this probably wouldn't stick is due to this "with criminal intent"... but its close enough to get your point across.

while i understand your feelings, i think they probably did you a favor.
would you be more pissed that they knocked it over trying to get around it with a wheel dolly.
they moved it because they felt it was the responsible and safer thing to do, seems like they were showing you respect rather than disrespect.
everyone is so touchy these days.
believe me i take just as much pride in my things as the next guy, and would be pissed if anyone scratched my truck or dented something that worked hard for, but i think you should take a second look at what they did for you.[Beer]

Not sure if you're not a bike guy, but touching another persons bike is a HUGE no-no. It's pretty much equivilant to somone walking up to your shooting bench and starting to fondle your firearms. Even when I was riding with a club in vegas, you still didn't touch anyone else's bike...let alone move it. What if they hopped in your car and moved it? Same thing, it's an invasion. Sorry, but it's not even remotely acceptable, they should have attempted to contact the owner so he could move it.

Respect would have been to contact the owner and ask him to move it. I'd be a lot more pissed if they knocked it over with a dolly but no less pissed they touched my bike. They assumed a lot of responsibility when they (or better the guy moving in) could have just talked to the neighbors. To me it's simple; don't mess with things that aren't yours.
File a complaint. Don't let it slide. They were way over the line.

there would have to be criminal intent.
I definitely think the guys need to learn a lesson...from their company, but to try to get them for attempted theft is a bit overboard.

i do not ride, but if you think that makes it impossible to understand or empathize then you are just egotistical.
I have the same attitude and feelings about my truck, my boat, my hot rod.
no different and no less important, if they had just moved it for the sake of moving it then get pissy, they were doing him a favor.
my guess is he lives in an apartment, they dont have time or means to go knocking on everyone's door to find him, for all you know they did.
i am not saying it was right, i am saying there are other sides to it and other ways to look at it.
not everything that happens to us in this world is worth getting in a twist about.

Calling the po po around here would get nothing done. I live in a cul-de-sac where there are park users that block our driveways. My neighbor has a sick wife and called the cops to complain about a car blocking his driveway. Ecause he might have to take her to the hospital...they're reply was "call an ambulance". Fucking bullshit!
OP you can make a complaint but I doubt it'll do anything. I would just have some choice words with the MFers and call it a day!

I should clarify my statement. I was referring to filing a complaint with the moving company and not the police.

The responsible & respectful thing to do is knock on your door or ring your doorbell and ask.....before you touch anything. I'm not a biker and I would be pissed.

NEVER EVER TOUCH ANOTHER MAN'S BIKE, EVER!!! If he gives you permission, you treat it like a baby. Growing up around that culture (eastbay area) and having ridden since my teens, that it a violation worthy of a death sentence. You touch one of mine and you will get hurt. Call the moving company and tell them about the incident, and the attitude of the drivers. Not cool at all.

It is not egotistical, you just don't get it. You have no point of reference. That is okay. It does not make you a bad person. It just means you do not know what you are talking about, and that lack of understanding of the rules in the biker community is what will get you into a world of hurt when you mix with biker esp. The 1% crowd. Violate the rules, get a beatdown.

I'm sure if the police will not do anything you can definitely get them towed if they won't move if you really don't want them blocking your drive. Just need to be able to show proof it's your home.
It would upset me to have someone move or touch my stuff without asking, period.
Maybe it is because I was the only child and am still like that. [Tooth]
They "should" have asked first to see if it can be moved, I am sorry if it is not mine or the person I am working for I need to "ask" first. Respect people's property, that is one of the problems our society has today, R-E-S-P-E-C-T, ........sing it with me!!!
As far as filing a complaint not sure on what level of bad, that is up to you, something might come out of it, but being a big company who knows if the grunts ever would get told.

This is the point where you call the moving company and start complaining.
I would complain because of the attitude they had. If I had employees treating people like crap I would want to know about it.

I parked my first bike at an auto parts store came out and someone had shorted my wiring out and put it in 6th, bent my mirror and some other bs.
No one touches my bike without permission.

Oh yeah, that takes it to a whole 'nother level. I'd be on the phone with corporate headquarters immediately. Shit would be rolling downhill to those knuckledraggers from waaaay uphill. This is a professional moving company, their whole business is about handling other people's things, with respect. Which they DID NOT give to you. I'd fry 'em.

whatever man, i totally get it, i just dont think they meant to disrespect him and they were giving him a measure of safety. they were not just some other dickhead that wanted to touch his bike. call their manager he will straighten them out. getting pissy with the guys that moved it only makes you the aggressor at that point. just call the cops before they do.
i am sure that they were dicks to him because of the attitude he gave them right off the bat. same attitude from some of guys posting here. ( i would have blown up in their face. that never gets you anywhere) he probably would have gotten the apology he is looking for had he called the manager of the company and not tried to deal with the movers.
these guys are movers, they lift heavy shit all day for a living, he is proabably lucky they were on the clock and did not clean his for him.
they probably would have apologized and the manager would have probably also had it been handled differently that is all i am saying.

Not trying to be antagonistic here, but would you feel the same way if it had been your truck, boat, or hot rod that a mover took the liberty to just move?

absolutely, but he is looking to complain, which he should and he should get an apology which he deserves. that was my point i understand being pissed off, but it could have been handled already.
we are not talking about an outlaw biker here and some 1%er that needs a beat down or the two movers would have been stabbed already and we would be having a completely different conversation.
i would have never moved the bike, but i do think they were trying to help him not be dicks

Here's one tactic - notify a supervisor (not the receptionist) at the moving company that their movers took on a HUGE liability by moving your vehicle without your permission. If they'd dropped it, you could have sued the company. I guarantee you, when you put it in terms of "liability" and "cost to the company" you'll get an apology.
you should have pushed your bike over and called the cops.. get yourself a new bike.. but no.. you waited to listen to what we would do..
You have it pretty good if this is all you can find to whine about. You didn't suffer any harm with what they did and you received your appology from the new neighbor.
Grow a pair, pull your panties out of your crack, and move on.

Exactly, I didn't know there were a bunch of 1%er's here, that will threaten bodily harm to someone with no malicious intent.
