Sewer Inspection

So my wife and me finally have a house in our sights. The inspector is coming over on Saturday to look at the house. We also need to have the sewer inspected. Is there a company out there that is recommended?

Sewer, or the line running to the sewer? In the 4 houses we have owned over 30 years, not once was a sewer inspection called for.

Septic and leeching fields sure, sewer???

I had a $14,000 sewer line repair bill because we didn't inspect ours. I most definately suggest getting one done. Any plumbing service can do it. I DO NOT recommend Ben Franklin Plumbing. Total Plumbing is good.

Both of my BIL's are in the drain cleaning trade. I know that they can get a camera.

House was built in 1978. What concerns me is the huge tree in the front yard. Kind of worried about the tree roots deteriorating the sewer line from the house to the street.

I got out for a mere $8500. I wish I'd had the sewer line snaked before buying. Plenty of places will do it for $99, it's worth it.

BIL can come out and run the main, he's been doing it long enough to feel what is going on.

I think $100 is pretty common for snaking the main line to the street with a camera.

Very valid concerns there! Good on ya for thinking about it, that would certainly be something I'd want to know before buying the house.

I was told that when they run the camera down the sewer that they could burn a movie or pictures onto a CD or DVD.

I didn't get a recording when they did my line. You should make sure you get a copy.

I understand you're just joking around. I'll explain anyway.

I was having problems when I had my sewer line scoped. The guy that scoped my line did several things that made me decide that there was no way I would be doing any further business with him. He did show me what the line looked like though. The other plumbers that I contacted about replacing the line all asked why I wanted it replaced. Short of getting it scoped again all I could tell them is what I saw convinced me it needed to be all replaced. Even with my uneducated eye I knew it wouldn't last much longer and it needed to be totally replaced, not just relined.

With a recording you can get a second opinion. Or have something to bargain with on the purchase. I wouldn't be surpised if the loan company might want to have a recording as part of the inspection report.
