Congrats! I'm jelly...find yourself a nice girl from a small town of farming community .hope her huge family likes you and you may just get your own range too [Tooth]

The better you are at NOT making it look like a range, the better it'll be (especially if you can keep Big Brother from wanting to "chat" with you about your new range)!
If this range is only for personal use, there isn't much you need to do. You can easily build some berms by just moving some dirt around and using some railroad ties to hold the dirt in place.
If you are planning to have range members or allow the public to use it, get yourself this book: http://www.nrahq.org/shootingrange/sourcebook.asp (or better yet, take the class that is offered by the NRA on the subject). Also, be aware that it won't be an inexpensive experience! Many folks think that the cost of the land is going to be their biggest expense when, in reality, it is not.
Best luck with your new range!!

Best luck with your new range!!personal use only , no "public" use at all ever . family and close friends occasionally but for the most part just me practicing .

I would assume that your in-laws have tractors. Scrape down the sight and build up berms at least 10 foot for a 250 yard range. Build some simple moveable benches and you are good to go. Have fun Al and don't forget your friends. Where is the property?

Go with cysto's advice.
Having a backhoe and dozer will get you a 20-30' wide area in no time. You can set your distance, then do staggered berms set for say 25-50-100 and 200 or 250. Or just berm it back X yards and range out targets at appropriate distance. You should have 20' high berms and consider sand or soft dirt from the berm back towards you approximately 50-100' to minimize ricochets.
The biggest thing to consider when doing the range, would be who and what are within an area should a round become stray.

CORN and more CORN ![ROFL1] [Beer]
thanks ill keep all that in mind , we are leaning toward a wooded area by the creek so it creates an natural berm about 30 foot made of sand and dirt . ill get my sorry but out there in the next few days and snap pics

you will still want to build a berm with a steep face ricochets can go a LONG way
Oustanding, Al! You lucky dog.
My only suggestion would be to always place your targets as close to the berm as possible, and move your shooting bench back to the distance you want to shoot at. I think that's the safest way, have the target frame right up as close to the dirt berm as possible, to minimize any ricochets.
That's how I always do it out at BLGC. I see too many guys that seem to think the berms are magical, and they set up their targets 50-75 yards away from the berm and shoot at low angles and hit the flat ground. I hear a LOT of ricochets out there.
Other than that, have a ball and grin like a skunk eatin' shit every time you use it!

It's farmland, all you do is throw old junk in the middle of nowhere, in your case 250 yards away from somewhere, and shoot at it...anything works...here are some suggestions.
bathtubs
trashcans
old walls to a barn
new walls to a barn
dirt
sinks
regular trash
and the list goes on and on

Thats cool Alex. I'm still working on one of my neighbors to let me put up a gong at the back half of his property. I could shoot 600 to 700 yards if he would let me do that.
But his wife won't budge!! [Rant1] [Bang][Bang]
I still shoot about 200 yards on his property that he doesn't know about. [Muaha]
