polygamy, should absolutely be legal. those of you who say, government has no place in marriage, must agree.
Weather you agree with it or not. If you can legally stick your buddy in the butt, you should be able to be married to however many women or men as you want.
And before you call all polygamist welfare leaches, think again. Sure, some are, but so are alot of married couples, alot of single people and lots of homosexual, transgender, bisexual, curious, etc ad naseum people.
The support structure created by polygamist relationships is generally very good for all parties.

I believe Govt should be out of the marriage business completely especially where the tax code is applied. If there's no benefit, (taxes, welfare, or otherwise) or drawback financially, the arguments all magically go away with the exception of the self righteous pricks that think they should run someone else's lives.
As long as all involved are consenting adults and they get no special rights or privileges because of it, Whatever floats your boat.
I loves me so Polygamy. [Beer]

I've never understood why a sane man would want to marry multiple wives but it I have no problem with it.
Why is the polygamy cry always for multiple wives and not multiple husbands? I guess women really are smarter.
My wife and I watched a reality show called "Sister Wives" yesterday about a mormon family living in las vegas. They had been outcast from the LDS church since they were a polygamist family. Overall they seemed pretty happy although the father plays the part of the "charismatic cult head" pretty well. Must be why all those "beauties" flock to him. Not sure about the welfare situation, but I didn't see any of them talking about working and they were buying a monster house to live in. The three unlawful wives are likely on the dole.
A strange way to live, but I could care less if others choose to live that way. Making polygamy legal should at least (in theory) make it harder for them to get on public assistance based on household income.

What ever you choose to do as an adult is solely your desision. Want 2 wives or 2 husbands go ahead. As long as I the taxpayer is not supporting you enjoy.

With all the aggrevation one woman can cause in my life, why in the world would one compound it?
Agreed on the entire "government out of marriage" scenario. Aside from exceptional cases like marrying a 10 year old its nobodies business.
Polygamy is defined as having too many wives...some would say the same about monogamy.
Agreed, government should not be in the business of legislating morality.

Let's have more married women. Call me an asshole, but when I was younger I used to date all kinds of married women. For me it was cool. When they got mouthy or controlling I could just send them back to their husbands. "don't need your shit, bitch, go home"..... LOL LOL

I am under the impression that there is only a tax benefit to marriage when the two incomes are significantly different from each other, like $120,000/yr compared to $30,000/yr. We talked about this in one of my economics classes back in college, but it has been a long time and I don't remember.

there shouldnt be any tax breaks for anyone. normal, homo, bi, tri, whatever marriage. the government shouldnt be recognizing any marriages. that is what your religious institution is for. no tax breaks for charitable giving, gambling losses, none of it.

Agree, with these comments as additional clarification support for my opinion:
I believe Govt should be out of the marriage business completely especially where the tax code is applied. CONSENTING ADULTS - everyone at least 18 years old & absolutely NO forced marriages or pressured marriages like the existing cults who practice polygamy practice.
Forfeiture of any sort of welfare or government social support benefits, including tax breaks.
Meet that criteria & I have no issues with it (although, it's not for me as I can barely deal with my one wife).
By officially acknowleging gay marriages, the government has already changed the meaning of the "word". Whether it be single hetero, gay or plural, "marriage" does bring certain benefits to the participants by corporate recognition of the bond to receive health, etc. benefits as well as sees as your lawful heirs. I figure that if they're going to recognize any non-additional bond as marriage, they should recognize all bindings between consenting adults as marriage if the principles involved wish it to be so.

Then it's them against you. With one pissed off mother in law.
FYI Depending on income circumstances getting married can often have negative tax consequences. The notion that people get married for tax deductions is a pretty idiotic one.
The only time a couple benefits from getting married tax wise is if you are a single income earning family. If both people in the marriage work you get f*cked on taxes by saying I do. I know this from personal experience.
IMO marriage is a big mistake these days. Legal marriage simply allows the government to get involved when you break up, which is only beneficial to the party who makes the lowest income.
If I could do it all over again I would have done a commitment ceremony that would have gone down exactly the same way a wedding does without the marriage certificate. No need to get the government involved in my relationship.
I know someone who would benefit from this... let's look at it from a legal standpoint, and I'll use this acquaintance for the example:
Okay, so this guy I know is married and they have a 3rd woman that lives with them, sleeps with them (both) and they call their 3some group a "couple" (loosely). Since they all equally love each other and live together and the whole 9 yards they only seek recognition on legal terms. Since as it stands right now he can't legally marry both women and the women can't be legally married. Now here's where the problem comes in- what happens if he is hospitalized, his "Wife" is the only one allowed during "family-only" moments, and she is the one to legally make the decisions while the "other" pretty much is screwed out of the deal legally speaking. I thought this was the land of the free and you are supposed to have the right to the pursuit of happiness... this hurts no one, so what is the problem?

Because it requires a license from the state to be a "legal" marriage. Because the states choose which forms of "marriage" to recognize. Because states afford special permissions to "married" couples.
Whether a religious term or not, the government has injected itself into the union between people, and treats people differently via taxes in relation to their legal relationship status. By doing so, the term "marriage" is no longer solely a religious term.
Make more sense now?

You missed my original point.
I said the "term" of marriage.
The government is offering other titles like "domestic partner" or things like that, that have the EXACT same benefits, tax breaks, etc. Not across the board as of yet, but it is coming. However, these folks are "demanding" the title of marriage.
The term marriage will always be a religious term. The two cannot be separated simply due to the origin of the word.

I didn't miss your point at all. Marriage as an institution and "term" has been co-opted by government to mean "domestic partnership". It's been that way for many years. Hence "marriage license" and not "domestic partnership permit"
